Chapter 5 - The Husband's Alibi

David Vance did not look up immediately when the heavy door slid shut behind his wife. He wore his usual crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the faint, jagged scar across his left wrist—a souvenir from a bio-chemical containment breach from five years ago, right around the time Toby was born.
"You shouldn't have bypassed the biometric gateway from the upper observation deck, Elena," David said softly, his voice carrying an exhausting weight of disappointment. He tossed the yellow ruler onto the glass desktop, where it came to rest beside a steaming ceramic mug of black coffee. "It triggers an automated diagnostic sweep. Now the entire administrative board knows you're down here."
Elena crossed the distance between the doorway and the central console in three rapid strides, her hands gripping the edge of the smooth glass surface. "Explain to me what is happening right now, David. Why was Toby locked in that corner? Why are there cameras in every classroom? What kind of sick experiment are you running with these children?"
David finally raised his head. His eyes were bloodshot and dark circles bruised the skin beneath them, mirroring the exhausted fury Elena had felt just moments before in the monitoring room. He didn't look like a mad scientist; he looked like a broken man carrying a burden too heavy for mortal shoulders.
"We aren't running an experiment, Elena. We are running a quarantine," David replied, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. He reached out and tapped a sequence of keys on the glowing console. One of the massive screens flickered, shifting from a live classroom feed to a complex, rotating biological helix overlaid with red warning text. Subject Zero: Cognitive Deviation Detected.
Elena stared at the screen, her breath hitching. The genetic sequence displayed was not standard human DNA; it was riddled with synthetic markers, encoded with a repeating alphanumeric string that matched her own corporate personnel identification number.
"That's my genetic signature," Elena whispered, horror dawning slowly in her chest. "Why is my DNA mapped to the children's quarantine protocols?"
David stood up slowly, coming around the desk to place his hands gently on her rigid shoulders. "Because the children aren't the subjects, Elena. They are the antibodies. And you just compromised the primary containment loop."

Before Elena could process the terrifying implication of his words, every monitor in the vast subterranean room simultaneously blinked off, plunging the amphitheater into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
