Chapter 3 - The Empty Corridor

Elena slammed her fist against the plexiglass partition separating the monitoring suite from the main hallway, the sharp crack echoing in the empty room. Her knuckles throbbed, but the physical pain did nothing to ground her swirling thoughts. On the central monitor, Mr. Harrison gestured silently toward the newly opened steel staircase. Julian was the first to move, descending into the absolute darkness without a single trace of hesitation. Toby followed close behind, his small light-blue polo shirt swallowed by the shadows of the subterranean stairwell.

"Mr. Harrison, what are you doing?" Elena muttered aloud, her voice tight with rising panic as she looked for a manual override switch on the console.

Before her fingers could brush the master control panel, the screen for Camera Four flickered violently. Static hissed across the display, dissolving into a looping, pre-recorded feed of an empty, brightly lit classroom. The wooden chairs were neatly tucked under the low tables. The yellow ruler lay innocently on the teacher's desk. The black cloth hung back in its original position over the wall mount, as if nothing had ever happened. It was a digital ghost, erasing the past ten seconds of reality before her very eyes.

Elena grabbed her car keys and her leather handbag, sprinting out of the monitoring room and into the dimly lit corridor of the administration wing. The hallway smelled of fresh wax and floor polish, utterly devoid of life. The rhythmic hum of the building’s ventilation system sounded like a collective, restrained sigh. She reached the double doors marked Authorized Personnel Only, pressing her palm against the electronic reader.

The panel blinked a harsh, unforgiving red. Access Denied.

"Override Code: Vance-Delta-Nine," Elena commanded the scanner, her voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking through her veins.

The reader processed the command for three agonizing seconds before emitting a cheerful chime. The heavy steel door clicked and swung inward, revealing a long, sterile corridor lined with identical grey doors. At the very end of the hall stood a lone security guard with his back turned to her, wearing a dark uniform identical to the one her husband wore when working the late-night lab shifts.

As Elena took a cautious step forward, the guard slowly turned his head over his shoulder. He wasn't wearing a standard security cap; instead, he wore a thin, glowing visor that pulsed with the exact same amber light as the classroom scanner.

"You’re late for the briefing, Mrs. Vance," the guard said, his voice modulated and entirely devoid of human warmth.
