Chapter 12 - The Monitoring Room Return

"Toby!" Elena cried out, scrambling across the polished floor on her hands and knees. She scooped her son into her arms, pulling his small, trembling body tightly against her chest.

Toby’s eyes fluttered open slowly. His curly brown hair was damp with sweat, and the red tear stains were still fresh on his cheeks, but the unnatural, glazed stiffness in his gaze was entirely gone. He looked up at her with clear, terrified recognition.

"Mommy?" he whispered, his small arms wrapping weakly around her neck. "The bad man with the yellow ruler... he said we had to stay in the corner until the lights went away."

"It’s okay, baby. Mommy’s got you. We’re getting out of here right now," Elena choked out, pressing a fierce kiss to his messy brown curls as she hoisted him up against her hip.

She stood up, her legs shaking with exhaustion, and looked toward the sprawling wall of monitors. Every single screen was dead, save for one flickering display in the center console. On that sole active screen, David’s face appeared, illuminated by the harsh, pulsing red light of the facility’s emergency self-destruct sequence.

"Elena," David’s voice crackled through the administrative room’s overhead speakers, distorted by heavy static and background alarms. "Can you hear me?"

"David, the thermal overload—you have to get out of the sub-basement now!" Elena shouted, clutching Toby tighter as she backed toward the heavy glass double doors leading to the exterior courtyard.

"There's no time," David replied, coughing harshly as the sound of alarms roared behind his transmission. "The override sequence is locked from the main terminal. Upload the drive, Elena. You have to feed the unredacted core data into the surface broadcast tower before the facility locks its outer perimeter for good."

Elena looked down at the small metal drive clutched tightly in her bloodied palm, then back at the monitor where her husband’s image was beginning to pixelate and dissolve into dense vertical lines of digital static.

"If I upload the data, the entire academy goes dark," Elena said, her voice dropping to a fierce, steady whisper. "What happens to us?"

May you like

"We finally wake up," David’s voice murmured softly just before the transmission cut out entirely, leaving the monitor frozen on a stark, unmoving frame of an empty, brightly lit classroom with a yellow ruler resting quietly on the desk.
