Chapter 14 - The Final Upload

Harrison took two slow, measured steps forward, raising the yellow ruler like a blade. "Hand over the drive, Elena. Spare yourself the cognitive fracture."
"Never," Elena spat, her eyes flashing with a sudden, blinding fury that mirrored the red glow of the facility's emergency lights.
Instead of running, Elena lunged forward with explosive speed, catching Harrison completely off guard. She slammed her shoulder directly into his chest, sending both of them crashing hard against the cold concrete base of the communication spire. Harrison grunted, his grip on the yellow ruler slipping as it clattered onto the stone pavement and shattered into two bright yellow pieces.
"Toby, hold on!" Elena cried out, dropping to one knee while shielding her son with her body as Harrison recovered with terrifying quickness, his heavy hand clamping down around her wrist with iron force.
With her free hand, Elena jammed the battered metal drive directly into the open access port of the communication spire. The terminal screen flared instantly to life, flashing a blinding amber warning message: WARNING: UNREDACTED CORE DATA UPLOADING. SYSTEM PURGE IN 10... 9... 8...
"Stop her!" Harrison roared, his mechanical composure cracking as he wrenched Elena’s arm back, trying to rip the drive from the console.
"It's already done, Harrison," Elena gasped through a grimace of pain, her fingers locked into the metal housing of the terminal port.
The countdown on the screen hit zero.
A massive surge of white light erupted from the tip of the communication spire, shooting straight up into the night sky like a digital beacon. Across the entire Oakridge campus, every window, every monitoring screen, and every glowing amber sensor simultaneously flashed brilliant white before plunging into absolute, permanent darkness.
The sirens stopped. The emergency strobes died. The oppressive hum of the subterranean generators faded away into profound, echoing silence.
Harrison froze mid-motion, his eyes rolling backward as the subdermal plating beneath his skin sparked and went completely dead. He slumped forward onto the pavement, motionless.

Elena slumped against the base of the spire, gasping for breath as she pulled Toby tightly into her arms in the quiet, starlit dark.
