Chapter 11 - The Thermal Overload

"No, David! We do this together!" Elena screamed, grabbing the lapels of his grease-stained shirt as the concrete wall cracked further, hissing plumes of superheated steam erupting from the fractures.

David gently peeled her fingers away, a sad, heartbreakingly tender smile touching the corners of his lips for the first time in years. "My neural signature is permanently bound to the archival core, Elena. If I leave this sector, the system flags the breach immediately and locks down the entire surface grid. You’re the only one whose cognitive encryption hasn't fully synchronized with the master database. You can still get out."

A deafening crash echoed through the basin as a massive section of the concrete wall buckled inward, revealing the dark, menacing silhouette of Mr. Harrison standing amidst a cloud of billowing grey smoke, his face obscured by a heavy tactical breathing apparatus.

"Go, Elena!" David roared, shoving her forcibly toward the vertical ventilation shaft just as a blinding arc of blue electricity snapped from Harrison’s thermal torch, striking David across the shoulder.

Elena scrambled upward into the narrow metal shaft, her fingernails scraping against the cold galvanized steel as she pulled herself up rung by frantic rung. Below her, a muffled shout of pain echoed through the basin, followed by the violent shriek of metal shearing under intense pressure and the heavy roar of the cooling grid’s automated valves releasing a torrent of pressurized steam.

The heat rushed up the ventilation shaft like an open furnace door, almost stealing the air from her lungs. She climbed higher, ignoring the blistering pain in her raw palms and the searing ache in her chest, driving herself upward on sheer maternal fury.

After what felt like endless agonizing minutes, her head struck a heavy metal grating at the top of the shaft. She slammed her shoulder against it once, twice, three times, until the rusted screws sheared off with a sharp metallic snap.

She tumbled outward onto the polished linoleum floor, gasping for breath in the cool, sterile air of the Oakridge administration wing.

She was back where it all began—right outside the main monitoring room. And sprawled unconscious on the floor just ten feet away, wearing a rumpled light-blue polo shirt and scuffed brown loafers, was Toby.
