Chapter 1 - The Yellow Ruler Incident

The air inside the Oakridge Academy monitoring room smelled faintly of ozone and stale coffee. Elena Vance stood completely motionless before the sprawling wall of high-definition monitors, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, unforgiving bun. Her tailored charcoal business suit felt suddenly too tight against her shoulders as she stared at Camera Four. On the glowing screen, her five-year-old son, Toby, stood pressed tightly against the beige corner wall next to a drooping American fabric flag. His curly brown hair was matted with sweat, and his light blue polo shirt bore dark tear stains near the collar.

"Stand still," Elena’s voice echoed sharply through the room’s hidden intercom speakers, laced with a dangerous chill that brooked no argument. "You can’t even follow one simple instruction. Crying isn’t going to save you."

Toby sniffled audibly, his red, tear-stained face crumpling further. Across the bright, sterile classroom, another boy—Julian, wearing a navy-and-white striped shirt—slowly stood up from his heavy wooden chair. Julian reached upward, his small fingers stretching to grab a heavy black cloth hanging over a mounted wall fixture.

Elena’s eyes widened. A sudden, blinding fury rushed behind her temples, turning her vision crimson.

"Stop!" Elena shouted into the open microphone, her voice cracking with sudden panic. "Get away from my son!"

On the monitor, the teacher inside the classroom—a middle-aged man named Mr. Harrison—whirled around in shock. He held a bright yellow plastic ruler aloft, his eyes darting upward toward the black dome of the security camera as if Elena were physically standing in the room with them.

Elena didn't wait for Harrison to react. She grabbed her smartphone from the sleek metal console, pressing it frantically against her ear while keeping her burning gaze locked on the live feed.

"Get me the school director," Elena snarled into the phone, her voice dropping to a fierce, trembling whisper. "Now!"

The phone line crackled with dead air before a tense, synthesized voice whispered through the receiver: "Mrs. Vance, you shouldn't have been watching that camera channel."
