Chapter 8: The Master Key

The heavy red pulse from the speaker cast long, bleeding shadows across the mixing console as Maya clutched the heavy brass key in her trembling hand. The cold numbness on the back of her neck slowly faded into a dull, stinging heat, reminding her that whatever had touched her was physically real, not just a trick of her terrified imagination. Through the reinforced glass of the heavy wooden door, the faint silhouette of Tyler was still visible, curled up against the baseboard in the hallway, clutching his knees as if trying to shrink away from the darkness closing in around him.
"Tyler!" Maya called out, raising her voice just enough to carry through the wood. "Tyler, can you hear me?"
A weak, ragged cough answered her from the other side. "Maya? Oh god... the lights in the hall are completely gone. And... and I hear things moving in the vents above my head."
Maya gripped the brass key tighter, the metal biting painfully into her palm. She looked down at the console, noticing a small, hidden floor panel tucked beneath the bottom rack of the mixing board—a panel she had never seen before in all the times she had snuck into the old station with her grandfather. The panel had a single, rusted keyhole that matched the exact dimensions of the master key she was holding.
"Hold on," she muttered, dropping to her knees beside the console.

She slid the heavy key into the rusted lock. It resisted at first, clogged with decades of dust and grime, but with a firm twist and a sharp metallic click, the floor panel sprang upward with a pneumatic hiss, releasing a plume of stale, ice-cold air that smelled of damp earth and old copper wiring.
Inside the dark shaft beneath the floor, a narrow metal ladder led straight down into absolute pitch blackness. And from the depths of that hidden shaft, a faint, rhythmic tapping sound began to rise—not coming from the speaker anymore, but climbing up the ladder toward her at an alarming speed.
