Chapter 3: The Ghost in the Machine

Maya stared at the glowing monitor, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The realization hit her with sickening clarity: the power outage that plunged the entire community center into darkness wasn't a random glitch, nor was it just a setup for Tyler's cruel joke. Someone had manipulated the building's master circuit, routing the remaining auxiliary current directly into this isolated studio. The speaker behind her pulsed again, a deep, resonant bass note that made the floor vibrate and rattled the coffee mug left behind by some forgotten radio DJ.

She reached out with a trembling hand and tapped a key on the archaic QWERTY keyboard connected to the terminal. The cursor blinked, waiting for an input. Without thinking, she typed a single word: "WHO?"

The response was instantaneous. The green text wiped clean, replaced by a flashing audio waveform that spiked violently. From the large black speaker, a distorted, heavily filtered voice hissed through the static, sounding frighteningly close to her own ear.

"The one who watches you through the glass, Maya."

Panic surged through her veins, hot and blinding. She spun around, slamming her back against the console, her eyes fixed on the reinforced glass window of the heavy wooden door. The hallway outside was pitch black, devoid of light or life, yet she could have sworn a pair of pale, unblinking eyes was staring right back at her from the absolute darkness. She raised her hands to her ears, pressing the noise-canceling earmuffs tightly against her head to block out the terrifying voice, but the sound didn't come from the air around her—it vibrated directly inside her bones.

"You can't hide in the noise," the synthesized voice echoed inside her mind.

Maya ripped the earmuffs off, breathing heavily as she realized the speaker was acting as a two-way transceiver. Whoever was controlling the system was broadcasting live from another terminal within the building. She looked down at the console and noticed a small red LED light blinking on the auxiliary input jack—a jack wired directly to the basement beneath the studio. If Tyler had locked her in here as a prank, he might have unwittingly stumbled into something far more dangerous than high school cruelty. He might have trapped her inside a live surveillance node.
