Chapter 5: The Glass Between Us

Maya hesitated, her boots frozen to the floor as Tyler pressed both palms flat against the reinforced glass. His mouth moved frantically, forming syllables over and over again, but the heavy door muffled every sound. She stepped closer, her eyes scanning his face for the usual arrogant sneer, finding only raw, unfiltered terror. He wasn't acting. Something was standing directly behind him in the unlit hallway—a long, unnatural silhouette stretching out from the ceiling like a pool of living ink.

She reached out, her fingertips brushing the cold glass from the inside, wishing desperately she could warn him, even after everything he had put her through.

"Run," Maya whispered against the glass, her breath fogging the surface.

Tyler shook his head frantically, pointing a trembling finger past her shoulder toward the massive black speaker behind her in the center of the room. The speaker’s red light had stopped blinking; it was now glowing with a steady, blinding crimson intensity that cast long, grotesque fingers of shadow across the back wall. The low humming sound had transformed into a clear, rhythmic tapping against the interior wooden cone of the speaker cabinet, as if someone—or something—was trapped inside the heavy plastic housing, trying desperately to punch its way out.

"Let me out!" a voice screamed from inside the speaker, a voice that sounded unmistakably like Tyler, yet pitched two octaves lower and dripping with static.

Tyler outside the door gasped, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief as he heard his own voice echoing from inside the locked studio. He grabbed the heavy brass doorknob and threw his entire weight against it, but the deadbolt held firm from the inside, jammed by an unseen mechanical force.

"Maya! Open the door!" Tyler shouted, his voice finally breaking through the wood, frantic and terrified.

Maya reached for the deadbolt lever, her fingers inches from safety, when the red light on the speaker suddenly snapped off, plunging the entire room into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
