Chapter 2: The Frequency of Fear

The sudden flash of white light illuminated the entire studio, revealing a room that hadn't seen human maintenance in over a decade. Dust motes danced frantically in the harsh glare, and Maya shielded her eyes with a sleeve. The massive black speaker emitted a low, electronic whine that seemed to resonate directly inside her skull, pushing against her thoughts like an unwanted guest. She scrambled to her feet, her boots crunching on broken glass near the mixing board. The door was locked tight from the outside, a heavy deadbolt slid into place by Tyler’s malicious friends, meaning screaming for help was utterly useless. Nobody ever came to the old west wing of the community center, especially not after midnight.

Maya approached the control console, its knobs rusted and levers stiff with age. The screen on the main monitor flickered to life, displaying a single, blinking text cursor on a sea of emerald green. She swallowed hard, her throat painfully dry. The audio feedback from the speaker behind her shifted tone, morphing from a harsh hum into a distinct melodic cadence—a sequence of four high notes followed by two low thuds. It was a tune she recognized instantly from her grandfather's old radio repair shop, a secret emergency alert code used during the broadcast era before the town went digital. Why would Tyler’s prank trap connect her to a fifty-year-old emergency frequency?

"That's impossible," Maya whispered to the empty room, her eyes darting back to the heavy wooden door.

Outside, the hallway remained silent, but a faint scratching sound scraped against the base of the door, as if something was trying to dig its way in. Maya froze, her breath catching in her throat. Tyler and his friends had gone—she had heard their laughter fade down the stairwell. So what was making that rhythmic, scratching noise just inches from her boots? She backed away slowly, her hands gripping the edge of the mixing console for support. The green monitor suddenly flashed red, and lines of unformatted data began scrolling down the screen at an impossible speed, spelling out words she never expected to see.

The text on the monitor formed a single, chilling question directed right at her: "DO YOU KNOW WHO REALLY TURNED OFF THE POWER, MAYA?"
