Chapter 14: The Override Code

The red light from the studio washed over Maya’s face as she stepped past the two silent figures standing in the doorway. Neither the duplicate nor the pale-eyed version of Tyler made a move to stop her; they simply turned in unison, watching her walk into the chaotic, blood-spattered control room as if she were a guest of honor arriving at her own execution.
Maya didn't hesitate. She stepped over the shattered glass, pushed past the overturned mixing console, and dropped to her knees in front of the open sub-basement floor panel. The air rising from the dark shaft was freezing cold, carrying the hum of the massive mainframe units below operating at maximum capacity.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out the heavy brass master key, her fingers slick with sweat. The intercoms throughout the entire building suddenly shrieked with a wall of deafening audio feedback, a sound so loud it felt as if her eardrums were about to burst. She clenched her teeth, pushed the noise-canceling earmuffs over her ears just enough to muffle the worst of the screeching, and thrust the master key into the hidden terminal slot beneath the main desk.
The green monitor on the console flashed wildly, scrolling lines of system code at blinding speed before stopping on a single prompt: "ENTER DESTRUCTION SEQUENCE."
Maya’s fingers hovered over the keyboard. She didn't know the code by heart, but she remembered her grandfather’s old warning about the emergency broadcast system: "When the machine starts talking in your voice, shut down the core frequency by matching the heartbeat."

She closed her eyes, listening to the rapid, terrified thumping of her own heart in her chest, and typed the four-digit numerical sequence matching her resting pulse rate into the terminal.
The console went completely dark instantly. The deafening feedback stopped with a sharp click. And the red light on the massive black speaker flickered once, twice, and died forever.
