Chapter 7: The Footsteps in the Room

Maya curled into a tight ball on the dusty floor, her eyes squeezed shut as the slow, heavy footsteps drew closer. Every creak of the floorboards matched the rhythm of her racing heartbeat. She tried to steady her breathing, pressing her face against her knees to stifle the sound of her terror. Outside the door, Tyler had stopped banging; his frantic shouts had degraded into muffled, whimpering sobs pressed against the reinforced glass.
"Please... please go away," Maya whimpered softly into the dark, her voice trembling uncontrollably.
The footsteps stopped abruptly, right beside her left shoulder. The air grew instantly freezing cold, smelling faintly of ozone and old, decaying paper—the exact scent of her grandfather’s old repair shop before it was boarded up. A heavy, ice-cold hand brushed against the back of her white sweater, sliding up slowly toward the nape of her neck with deliberate, agonizing precision.
Maya gasped, unable to hold back a sharp intake of breath, and scrambled forward across the floor, her hands scraping against rough wood and broken glass. She hit her shin hard against the heavy base of the audio speaker, biting her lip to keep from screaming out in pain.
"Found you," a voice rasped right beside her ear, sounding like dry leaves scraping across concrete.
She spun around, swinging her arm blindly into the empty air, but her fist connected with nothing. The cold hand was gone, leaving behind a lingering numbness on her skin that pulsed with a dull, rhythmic ache. She dragged herself upward, using the edge of the mixing console to pull her shaking legs upright. Her fingers brushed against a cold metal object lying on the surface of the desk—a heavy, brass-plated studio key with a frayed red tag attached to the ring.

In the dim red pulse that suddenly flickered back to life from the speaker, Maya looked down at the tag. It was stamped with a single word: "MASTER."
She stared at the key in absolute disbelief, realizing that this key didn't belong to the studio door she had tumbled through. It was the master key to the sub-basement archive where the truth about the 1994 disappearances was locked away.
