Chapter 10: The Duplicate

Maya stumbled backward, her hand flying to her mouth to stifle a scream of pure horror. The figure slumped over the mainframe terminal didn't just wear her clothes; it was an exact, chilling physical replica of herself, down to the small smudge of grease on the left sleeve and the frayed hair tie around her wrist. As she watched in petrified disbelief, the duplicate slowly raised its head, its eyes snapping open to reveal completely solid, milky-white irises devoid of any human life.
"You took too long to answer the broadcast," the duplicate spoke, its voice echoing in unison from every server rack surrounding the chamber.
Maya backed away until her shoulders pressed hard against the cold concrete wall. Her mind raced, struggling to process the impossible reality unfolding before her eyes. This wasn't just a psychological break or a high school prank engineered by Tyler and his friends. The broadcasting station was operating as an anomalous psychological trap—a machine designed to harvest, duplicate, and replace everyone who ever crossed its threshold.
"What are you?" Maya whispered, her voice trembling violently as she slid down the wall until she hit the floor.
The duplicate stood up slowly from the metal chair, its movements jerky and unnatural, like a marionette whose strings were being pulled by an unskilled master. It took a deliberate step toward her, the dead white eyes fixed entirely on her face.
"I am the signal that stays when you leave," the duplicate replied, its voice blending with the low, rhythmic hum of the massive mainframe units powering up around them.
Suddenly, a loud, heavy pounding echoed from the ceiling directly above them—the sound of Tyler desperately trying to force open the sub-basement access hatch from the floor above.

"Maya! Can you hear me down there? The door in the hall just unlocked itself!" Tyler’s voice crackled through an overhead intercom speaker, sounding desperate and genuinely terrified.
The duplicate froze, its head cocking at an impossible, unnatural angle as it listened to Tyler's voice echoing through the subterranean chamber. A slow, chilling smile spread across its pale face, mirroring Maya's own features in the most distorted, wicked way imaginable.
