Chapter 8 - The Shattered Vial

The glass vial spun through the dim nursery air in slow motion, catching the pale blue light of the smartphone screen before crashing hard against the base of the white crib.
Smash.
The thick glass shattered instantly. The amber liquid splattered across the pristine white wood, sizzling loudly as it ate through the paint like acid. But worse than the chemical reaction was what came out of the broken vial.
The single human eye didn't die or dry up on the carpet. Instead, it sprouted dozens of microscopic, translucent legs, scurrying across the floorboards with terrifying speed toward the dark, bottomless void that had opened up where the carpet used to be.
"Catch it!" the tall entity roared, its voice shaking the walls so violently that plaster dust began to rain down from the ceiling.
Clara scrambled across the floor on her hands and knees, ignoring the broken glass cutting into her palms. She dove headfirst toward the void, stretching her fingers out to grab the scurrying eye before it could slip into the darkness below.
Elena took her chance. With adrenaline surging through every vein, she kicked off the wall, holding baby Maya tightly against her chest, and sprinted toward the open nursery door.
"Mr. Vance, now! Run!" Elena screamed over the deafening roar of the shifting house.
David didn't hesitate. He scrambled up from the floor, ignoring the burning numbness in his right arm, and chased after Elena. But as they reached the doorway, the hallway floorboards suddenly buckled upward with a deafening crack, splitting right down the middle to reveal a steep, pitch-black staircase descending deep into the foundation of the house—a staircase that definitely had not been there when they walked up ten minutes ago.
Elena stopped dead in her tracks, the edge of her shoe hovering over a sheer drop of fifty feet into absolute darkness. "There's... there's no hallway left."
David grabbed Elena’s shoulder, pulling her back just as a large section of the wooden floor collapsed into the abyss with a thunderous crash. He looked back over his shoulder.
Inside the nursery, Clara had successfully caught the scurrying eye in her bare hands. She clutched it tightly to her chest, her body shuddering as the amber liquid from the broken vial absorbed directly into her skin, turning her veins a glowing, toxic orange.
The tall, trench-coated entity stood directly behind her, placing its heavy, tar-stained hand on Clara’s head.
"You can't escape the basement, David," the entity rasped, its voice echoing from the bottom of the newly revealed abyss. "The foundation has already swallowed the front door."

David pulled out his smartphone with his left hand, praying for a signal, but the screen was completely dead, displaying a single, chilling text message from an unknown number: WELCOME TO THE BASEMENT.
