Chapter 6 - The Unlocked Door

The heavy footsteps reached the landing outside the nursery door, pausing for a single, agonizing moment of dead silence. The floorboards beneath the hallway carpet groaned under an immense, unnatural weight, as if whoever—or whatever—was standing out there weighed three hundred pounds yet made no sound when taking steps.

David’s grip on Clara’s shoulders tightened, but her body felt rigid, like cold marble rather than human flesh. The luminescent amber glow in her eyes pulsed in time with the heavy breathing coming from the hallway.

"Claire, listen to me," David hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer panic. "I don't know what kind of psychotic break you're having, but we are getting out of this house right now. Elena, grab Maya and head for the fire escape outside the guest bedroom."

Elena didn't hesitate. She clutched the crying toddler tightly against her chest, turning swiftly toward the door. But before her hand could even touch the brass knob, the nursery door swung wide open on its own, clicking softly against the wall.

The hallway outside was pitch black. The overhead lights had blown out, their glass bulbs shattered into fine powder across the floorboards. Standing in the doorway was a tall silhouette wearing a heavy, mud-soaked trench coat that dripped dark water onto the clean carpet. The figure wore a wide-brimmed felt hat pulled low, casting the upper half of its face into deep shadow.

However, protruding from beneath the brim of the hat was a single, unblinking human eye, staring directly at the glass vial still clutched in Clara’s hands.

"Welcome home, Father," Clara whispered, bowing her head in deep submission.

The tall figure didn't speak. Instead, a sound like dry autumn leaves scraping across concrete emanated from deep within its chest. It raised a hand—a hand with fingers that were impossibly long, ending in jagged, black-stained fingernails—and pointed a long, bony finger directly at baby Maya in Elena’s arms.

Elena let out a short, choked gasp, stumbling backward until she collided with the white crib. "Get away from her! Don't touch this child!"

"Elena, run!" David roared, releasing Clara and lunging toward the shadowy intruder with desperate, blind fury. He threw a heavy right hook straight at the center of the figure's chest.

His fist connected, but there was no impact of flesh and bone. It felt like punching a dense wall of cold, rushing water. David’s arm plunged straight through the figure’s torso, the freezing mist instantly numbing his skin up to his shoulder.

The figure slowly turned its head ninety degrees to the left, a sickening pop echoing through the room, and locked its amber eye onto David.

"You always were clumsy with your inheritance, David," the figure rasped in a voice that sounded like grinding millstones.

David stumbled backward, clutching his frozen right arm, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Who... what are you?"

May you like

The figure stepped fully into the nursery, the mud from its boots staining the white carpet a deep, tarry black. "I am the man who built the foundation of this house on human bones, David. And today, the foundation collects its interest."
