Chapter 12 - The Fractured Floor

The glowing cracks in the stone floor expanded with terrifying speed, releasing a blinding amber light and a wave of intense heat that scorched the soles of David’s shoes.

"Jump!" David yelled, grabbing Elena’s arm just as the stone beneath them gave way completely, collapsing into a chasm of churning black mist.

They leaped backward, crashing hard onto a narrow, stable ledge of solid granite that ringed the perimeter of the cavern. Below them, the center of the underground chamber had transformed into a swirling vortex of ash and fire, consuming the granite table and the burning miniature house entirely.

Elena panted heavily, clutching baby Maya so tightly the baby let out a sleepy, irritable grunt. "We're trapped, Mr. Vance! There's no other way out of this ledge!"

David scanned the perimeter wall. Behind them, half-hidden by the skeletal pillars, was a small, heavy iron door set flush into the rock face. A rusted padlock hung from the latch, but the wood of the door looked weathered and rotten.

"The utility exit," David said, pointing frantically toward the door. "If the blueprints were real, that leads to the old storm cellar on the eastern side of the property."

Across the chasm, Clara stood at the very edge of the collapsing center platform. The amber glow in her eyes was now so bright it consumed her entire face, leaving only a glowing silhouette against the fire.

"You can't run from the foundation, David!" Clara’s voice echoed across the chasm, distorted and booming. "The land owns your blood! The land owns your child!"

David didn't waste time arguing. He threw his full weight against the rusted iron door, smashing his shoulder into the rotting wood. It held firm. He kicked it violently twice, the old hinges screaming in protest until the latch snapped with a loud crack.

The door swung inward, revealing a steep, narrow concrete tunnel illuminated by faint, natural daylight filtering down from a rusted grating far above.

"Elena, go! Climb!" David shouted, shoving the nanny through the opening just as a massive slab of stone crashed down from the cavern ceiling, missing them by inches.

Elena scrambled through the doorway without looking back, hoisting baby Maya ahead of her up the concrete steps toward the daylight. David turned back for one last look at his wife.

Clara stood at the edge of the abyss, her arms outstretched, a tragic, heartbreaking human tear cutting through the glowing amber on her cheek just before the smoke swallowed her whole.
