Chapter 13 - The Rusted Grating

The concrete tunnel felt like a breath of fresh, living air after the suffocating sulfur of the subterranean catacomb. David practically fell through the doorway behind Elena, slamming the heavy iron door shut just as a massive wall of fire erupted from the cavern behind them, charring the outside of the wood to a crisp black.
"Keep moving! Don't look back!" David panted, coughing as he scrambled up the steep concrete steps on his hands and knees.
Elena was already several yards ahead, cradling baby Maya safely against her chest as she scaled the narrow staircase. Above them, a heavy iron grating blocked the exit, but the bolts holding it in place were rusted away from decades of rain and neglect.
With a final, desperate burst of adrenaline, Elena slammed her shoulder upward against the grating. It gave way with a screech of rusted metal, bursting open into the bright, blinding sunlight of the late afternoon.
Cool summer air rushed down into the dark tunnel, carrying the sweet scent of freshly cut grass and pine needles. They weren't in the basement anymore; they were out in the open yard, several yards away from the burning wreckage of the main house.
Elena pushed herself up through the opening, tumbling out onto the green lawn, and immediately pulled baby Maya away from the dust, checking every inch of the toddler to ensure she was completely unharmed. Maya blinked sleepily at the bright sky, completely oblivious to the nightmare they had just escaped.
David hauled himself out of the storm cellar seconds later, collapsing onto the grass beside Elena. He lay flat on his back, staring up at the blue sky, his chest heaving as he tried to process the horror of the last twenty minutes.
Behind them, the main house gave one final, shuddering groan. The roof of the nursery collapsed inward, sending a massive plume of black smoke billowing up into the atmosphere, followed immediately by the wailing sirens of approaching fire trucks and police cruisers wailing in the distance.
"Mr. Vance... look," Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she pointed toward the smoldering ruins of the front porch.
David lifted his head. Standing amidst the settling dust and ash near the front driveway was Clara. She was no longer glowing. Her beige top was scorched and blackened, her dark hair matted with sweat and dirt. She stood completely alone, staring down at her bare hands as if she had just woken up from a decades-long coma.
"David?" Clara whispered, her voice sounding small, fragile, and completely human for the first time since the night began.

David slowly rose to his feet, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line as he took his first step toward his wife.
