Chapter 11 - The Collapsing Model

The miniature house on the granite table burned with a silent, unnatural fire that emitted no smoke, only a searing wave of dry heat that made the air shimmer. As the tiny white crib burned down to ash, the ceiling of the underground cavern above them groaned, dropping clumps of dirt and small stones onto the stone floor.
"What did you do?" David yelled, lunging toward the table to sweep the burning miniature off the granite slab.
Before his fingers could graze the wood, an invisible wall of force slammed into his chest, throwing him backward across the dust-covered floor. He slid several feet before crashing hard against the base of one of the skeletal pillars, gasping for air as the impact knocked the wind entirely out of his lungs.
"Mr. Vance!" Elena cried out, rushing to his side while keeping baby Maya safely tucked against her chest. She knelt down, her hands shaking as she checked his face. "Are you alright? Can you breathe?"
David nodded weakly, coughing as he pushed himself up onto one elbow. He glared at Clara, who stood unmoving beside the burning table, watching the miniature house turn to black cinders.
"The house above us is collapsing," David rasped, his voice tight with pain. "If that model burns completely, the real nursery—everything—is going to cave in on us."
Clara didn't blink. The luminescent amber glow in her eyes had begun to leak down her cheeks like glowing tears. "The nursery was never meant to hold a child, David. It was built as an altar. Maya was never your daughter to keep; she was the final payment due to the foundation."
Elena’s face hardened with fierce, protective fury. She stood up, holding Maya like a shield, her dark eyes flashing with a courage that surprised even David. "She is a human being, not a payment! You're out of your mind, Mrs. Vance. No house, no debt, and no dead ancestor is worth sacrificing a child!"
Clara slowly turned her head toward the nanny. The dual-toned voice rumbled deep in the chamber, vibrating the dust off the skeletal pillars. "You speak out of turn, servant. You know nothing of the blood pact that protects this land."
"I know a murderer when I see one," Elena shot back, taking a slow step toward the cavern exit. "Mr. Vance, help me. We have to find another way out before this ceiling caves in completely."
David gritted his teeth, ignoring the stabbing pain in his ribs, and scrambled to his feet. He grabbed a heavy iron torch bracket torn from one of the pillars, using it as a makeshift club. "Claire, this is your last chance. Step away from the table, or I swear to God I will break that altar."
May you like
Clara’s expression twisted into a mask of pure fury. She raised her hands, and the entire stone floor beneath David and Elena’s feet began to fracture into a spiderweb of glowing cracks.
