Chapter 14 - The Sirens

The red and blue flashing lights of the emergency vehicles painted the smoldering ruins of the house in harsh, alternating strokes. Firefighters were already unrolling heavy canvas hoses, directing high-pressure streams of water toward the collapsed nursery wing, while paramedics rushed across the lawn with stretchers and oxygen masks.
David stood ten feet away from Clara, his fists clenched tightly at his sides. The burnt smell of synthetic carpet, old timber, and sulfur still hung thick in his clothes, but the unnatural cold that had gripped the house was completely gone, replaced by the humid heat of a normal summer afternoon.
Clara fell to her knees on the charred grass, wrapping her arms around herself as violent, genuine tears streamed down her cheeks. "David... what happened? I... I remember walking up the stairs, and then... it was like someone else was driving my body."
David didn't move toward her. He kept a safe, cold distance, his eyes searching her face for any lingering trace of the amber glow. Her eyes were their natural warm brown once more, wide with absolute horror and confusion.
"You brought something into this house, Claire," David said, his voice flat, exhausted, and utterly devoid of warmth. "You and your family built a cage, and you used our daughter as the bait."
"I didn't know!" Clara sobbed, pressing her forehead against the damp grass. "My father... he made me promise. He said if I didn't carry the box across the threshold, the entity would take my entire family instead. I swear to God, David, I tried to fight it."
"You almost got our daughter killed," Elena’s voice cut through the noise of the sirens. The nanny stood a few feet away, holding baby Maya securely in her arms, flanked by two paramedics who were gently guiding her toward an ambulance to check her vitals. Elena looked at Clara with a mixture of pity and unyielding disgust. "An innocent child, Mrs. Vance. There is no curse in the world that excuses trading a baby."
Before Clara could answer, a pair of police officers stepped forward, gently placing handcuffs around her wrists.
"Clara Vance, you're being detained for questioning regarding the destruction of property, child endangerment, and suspected arson," the lead officer stated professionally, reading her rights as they lifted her to her feet.
Clara didn't fight them. She let herself be led away toward the squad car, turning her head just once to look back at David with a broken, pleading expression.
David turned his back on her, walking slowly toward the ambulance where Elena and Maya were sitting. He looked down at his daughter, his heart finally beginning to settle in his chest.

As the police cruiser doors slammed shut and the sirens began to fade down the long driveway, David reached out to touch Maya’s tiny hand. But as his fingers brushed hers, a sudden, cold breeze swept across the lawn, carrying a whisper directly into his ear.
