Chapter 2 - The Silence of the Memory Card

The ambient hum of the house air conditioning suddenly sounded deafening in the quiet nursery. David remained frozen on his knees, the smartphone glowing like a dying ember in his palm. The screen continued to loop the impossible video feed: one-year-old Maya sitting entirely by herself on the middle of the floor, playing with a wooden block, while the timestamp in the corner proved this had happened five minutes before Clara and David had even rushed up the stairs.
"What is this?" David whispered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register that Clara had never heard before. He looked up, his dark eyes narrowing as he pierced her with a look of pure betrayal. "You said the card was changed. You said it wasn't recording."
Clara swallowed hard, her throat visibly tightening. She took a half-step backward, her beige top rustling against her jeans. "I... I meant the backup server, David. You know how the cloud syncs. It glitches. It always has glitches."
"It doesn't glitch like this, Claire," Elena interjected softly, her voice steadying as she finally pushed herself up from the carpet. She dusted off her grey uniform pants, her dark eyes flashing with a quiet, vindictive intelligence. "The local drive stores everything independently. Unless someone manually wiped the primary partition within the last ten minutes."
David turned his gaze slowly from his wife to the nanny. "How do you know that, Elena?"
"Because Mr. Vance, I installed the system myself last month when you were out of town," Elena replied, holding his gaze without flinching. "Mrs. Vance asked me to hide the master password. She said it was for privacy reasons. But I kept a localized offline mirror on my personal tablet. Just in case."
Clara’s breath hitched. She lunged forward with sudden, animalistic speed, trying to swat the smartphone out of David’s grip. "Give me that! It's a deepfake! You're both conspiring against me!"
David deftly pulled his hand back, standing up to his full height while still cradling a now-quiet Maya against his shoulder. He easily evaded Clara’s frantic reach, his expression turning from shock to ice.
"Don't touch me, Claire," David warned, his voice deadpan and terrifying. He tapped the screen, maximizing the historical playback files. A new folder appeared, cataloging every single night for the past three weeks. There were hundreds of gigabytes of archived footage.
"Let's see what else your privacy settings managed to capture while we were sleeping," David said, his thumb hovering over a file labeled 3:14 AM.

Clara stopped moving entirely. Her arms dropped to her sides, and a dark, sinister smile slowly twisted the corners of her mouth.
