Chapter 8: The Smart Home Lockdown

The heavy silence that followed Marcus’s threat was broken only by the distant, ominous hum of the estate’s main power generator spooling up near the perimeter wall. Julian stared at the attorney, his jaw clenched so tightly his teeth ached. He knew Marcus wasn't bluffing; as the primary legal architect of the home automation network, Marcus had backdoor administrative credentials embedded deep within the system architecture—credentials Julian had foolishly trusted him with years ago.
"You wouldn't dare," Julian said, though a cold knot of dread began to form in his stomach. "Locking down an occupied residence violates federal safety protocols. The local authorities will flag the override instantly."
Marcus chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "What authorities, Julian? The local network disconnects us from the municipal grid first. Your phone is already routing through our encrypted proxy. Look at your screen."
Julian quickly glanced down at his smartphone. The signal bars had completely vanished, replaced by a solid red roaming icon. The cloud backup of the pool camera footage, which had just finished downloading moments ago, suddenly flickered, glitched, and vanished entirely from his screen, replaced by a generic error message: FILE CORRUPTED. ACCESS DENIED.
"No!" Elena cried out, rushing forward a few steps. "He deleted it again! Mr. Sterling, they are cutting us off from the outside world!"
Victoria smiled triumphantly, stepping back toward Marcus’s side as the automated patio lights suddenly flickered, dimmed, and then snapped off completely, plunging the poolside into absolute darkness except for the eerie, dancing blue reflections from the water.
"One..." Marcus began counting down, his voice echoing smoothly across the dark patio stones. "Two..."
Julian’s mind raced at lightning speed. He couldn't fight them physically while holding an infant, and without communication or proof, any attempt to call the police from the house landlines would result in a dead dial tone. He had to stall them, find a blind spot in the network, and get Elena and the baby out through the perimeter service gate before the digital prison walls closed completely.
"Wait," Julian called out, holding up a hand as he took a slow step backward toward the shadows of the arched doorway. "Let’s talk about the asset transfer. We don’t need to involve the courts. Just... give me a minute to review the financial clauses inside."

Marcus stopped his countdown, a smug grin spreading across his face. He believed he had broken Julian’s resistance. "Smart choice, Julian. Bring the baby and the phone over to the light by the driveway. We’ll finalize it right now."
As Marcus and Victoria took a collective step forward to close the distance, Julian whispered sharply to Elena without breaking eye contact with the intruders. "When I say run, grab the heavy iron poker by the outdoor fireplace, smash the side utility box, and run for the perimeter fence. Don't look back."
