Chapter 7: The Ultimatum Under the Open Sky

The cool night breeze swept across the patio, carrying the chemical scent of pool chlorine and the dry rustle of palm fronds overhead. Julian stood completely motionless, the baby sleeping securely against his chest, while Marcus held out the thick stack of legal documents like an executioner presenting a death warrant.
"You're out of your mind," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and uncontainable fury. "You think you can just march onto my property in the middle of the night, cover up an attempted murder with a briefcase full of paperwork, and expect me to hand over my son?"
Marcus didn't blink. His expression remained a mask of chilling corporate coldness. "It’s not about what I think, Julian. It’s about what the board of directors at your firm will think when they find out your wife is institutionalized for a severe psychiatric break, and you are publicly accused of child endangerment by your own household staff." He tilted his head slightly toward Elena, who was still pressed against the glass wall. "Isn't that right, Elena? Weren't you just trying to take the baby away from an abusive household?"
Elena’s blood ran cold. She pushed herself off the wall, stepping forward despite her shaking legs. "No! That’s a lie! I told the truth! She pushed the stroller!"
"Quiet, maid," Marcus snapped, cutting her off with a wave of his hand as if she were nothing more than an annoying insect. He turned his gaze back to Julian. "She’s an immigrant worker with zero financial backing, Julian. Who do you think a jury is going to believe? A desperate employee caught red-handed by the lady of the house, or a respected tech executive whose family is falling apart?"
Julian looked down at the documents in Marcus’s hands. Glancing at the top page, his eyes caught a bold heading: Voluntary Relinquishment of Parental Rights and Sole Asset Transfer to Victoria Sterling. It was a complete corporate and domestic hostile takeover, disguised as a domestic dispute. They weren't just trying to cover up the pool incident; they were stealing his entire life, using his own software infrastructure and legal loopholes against him.
Victoria stepped closer, her voice dropping into a soft, mocking purry. "Just sign it, Julian. Go back to your servers and your code. Let me handle the boy. You never really wanted the responsibility anyway—you were always too busy building empires that didn't matter."
Julian’s chest heaved. He looked down at his son, whose tiny chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm. The temptation to just give in, to walk away from the toxic nightmare and start over, flashed through his mind for a fraction of a second. But the fierce love of a father quickly crushed it. He slowly raised his free hand, not to take the pen, but to point directly at Marcus's face.

"Get off my property," Julian said, every word dripping with ice. "Both of you. Before I forget that I’m a civilized man."
Marcus slowly lowered the briefcase, his lips curling into an ugly, confident smile. "You have until the count of three to hand over the child, Julian. Otherwise, my associate at the front gate executes the protocol that locks out your entire smart home network—leaving you trapped in the dark with no exit, no phone service, and no way out."
