Chapter 3: The Solid Red Indicator of Silence

The sudden shift from a blinking red indicator to a steady, unblinking crimson glow cast an eerie stillness over the poolside patio. Elena stopped crying, her breath catching in her throat as she stared upward. That solid light meant only one thing in the high-end automation system of the Sterling mansion: the recording had been remotely accessed, altered, or forcefully terminated from an internal administrator console.
Julian noticed the change instantly. As a tech entrepreneur who designed enterprise security software, he knew every line of code behind the house's infrastructure. His eyes narrowed as he looked from the camera back to Victoria, whose chest rose and fell in shallow, rapid movements.
"Victoria," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave into a cold, dangerous register that made Elena shiver. "The LED just switched to permanent lock. That only happens when a manual override is executed from the main server in the study. You told me the system was down for maintenance. But it wasn't down. Someone just logged in."
Victoria swallowed hard, her throat visibly tightening. She forced a stiff, defensive smile, though her eyes darted nervously toward the sliding glass doors leading into the mansion. "The... the automated failsafe must have triggered," she stammered, a rare stutter breaking her usually flawless cadence. "The system updates itself automatically at midnight. You know how glitchy these smart homes are, Julian."
"No, Victoria," Julian replied, shifting the baby carefully to one arm so he could reach into his pocket and pull out his smartphone. "Smart homes don't lie. And neither do I."
With shaking fingers, Julian tapped open the master diagnostic app. The screen illuminated his tense, pale face in a harsh blue glow. Elena pushed herself up from the wet tiles, her bruised knees throbbing, and crept a few inches closer to watch the screen over Julian’s shoulder. Victoria lunged forward like a striking cat, attempting to swat the phone from his hand, but Julian was too fast. He dodged her grip, holding the device high out of reach.
"Don't you dare look at that!" Victoria shrieked, dropping all pretense of aristocratic calm as she grabbed at Julian’s arm, her fingernails biting into his skin. "Trust me! Trust your wife!"
Julian ignored her, his eyes scanning the fast-scrolling system logs on his display. The color drained entirely from his face. The access log showed a local administrator login exactly three minutes ago—originating from the private tablet inside Victoria’s dressing room.

"It wasn't a glitch," Julian whispered, the words sounding hollow and broken in the night air. He turned his head slowly to stare at his wife. "You accessed the live stream, Victoria. You deleted the footage of what really happened out here."
Victoria froze, her arms dropping limply to her sides as the silence of the night swallowed them whole, broken only by the frantic chime of an incoming alert from the main house server.
