Chapter 2: The Blank Screen and the First Lie

Julian stood frozen beneath the eaves of the grand terrace, his gaze shifting back and forth between Victoria’s tightly locked jaw and the small, pulsing red light of the security camera above. The humid night air grew heavy, thick with an unspoken tension that made breathing difficult. Victoria’s manicured fingers twitched against the shimmering silk of her emerald dress as she forced a tight, brittle laugh that lacked any true amusement.

"See?" Victoria pressed on, stepping further into Julian’s line of sight to block his view of the lens. "I told you, Julian. The system was scheduled for a hard reboot at midnight. There is nothing recorded. She is just buying time because she got caught red-handed."

Elena stayed on her knees, the damp fabric of her uniform clinging uncomfortably to her skin as she shook her head in sheer disbelief. The cold tiles beneath her felt like ice. "No! That's a lie!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking with raw desperation. "The red light is blinking! A reboot light blinks differently, and you know it! Check the hard drive, Mr. Sterling! Please, just look at the monitor inside!"

Julian looked down at the infant sleeping soundly in his arms, utterly unaware of the storm raging around him. His brow furrowed deeper, a shadow of profound doubt crossing his grey-shirted chest as he felt the sheer weight of Victoria’s sudden panic. He had known Victoria for five years, but he had also known Elena's gentle devotion to his child for two. Something in Victoria's frantic overreaction didn't sit right in his gut.

"Victoria, move aside," Julian said quietly, his voice dangerously low and steady. "If the camera was off, it won't take ten seconds to verify it on the living room terminal. Let’s just look at the logs."

Victoria’s face lost its remaining color, turning a pasty, sickly white under the amber glow of the patio lights. For a split second, her composure cracked, revealing a terrified cornered animal. But she quickly recovered, stepping directly in front of Julian and pressing her palms hard against his chest.

"Are you calling me a liar?" Victoria hissed, her voice trembling with manufactured outrage. "You would trust a desperate, fired maid over your own wife? After everything I have sacrificed for this family?"

Elena watched them from the ground, her chest heaving as she sucked in ragged breaths. She knew Victoria was hiding something massive, something that went far beyond a simple midnight misunderstanding by the pool. But as Julian hesitated, torn between his wife's fierce demands and his own growing suspicions, the red light above them suddenly stopped blinking and turned completely solid.
