Chapter 9 - The Power Cut and the Intruder

The fluorescent lights flickered violently twice before dying completely, plunging the sterile examination ward into pitch darkness. The blaring whine of the emergency klaxon filled the void, casting a rhythmic, pulsing red glow across the stainless-steel walls. Dr. Alan Vance stumbled backward, dropping the blue-filled syringe onto the floor where it shattered instantly against the linoleum. The sudden disruption startled even the calculating therapist, who fumbled frantically in his coat pocket for a tactical flashlight. Clara strained against her leather restraints in the sudden chaos, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

"Who's there?" Vance barked into the shadows, gripping a small metal scalpel he had snatched from the tray. "Identify yourself immediately!"

Heavy, rapid footsteps echoed down the tiled hallway outside the ward. They didn't sound like the measured, clinical stride of medical staff or the quiet padding of children. These were heavy boots, moving with fierce, urgent momentum. Before Vance could raise the scalpel toward the doorway, the reinforced glass panel of the ward door exploded inward in a shower of glittering shards. A dark, imposing figure stepped through the broken frame, silhouetted by the crimson emergency strobe. It wasn't security personnel. The man stepped fully into the red light, and Clara gasped aloud as she recognized the familiar heavy dark jacket and worn jeans.

Mark.

"Step away from her, Alan," Mark growled, his voice carrying a dark, lethal resonance that Clara had never heard before in all their years together.

Dr. Vance pressed his back against the opposite wall, holding the scalpel defensively in front of him. A strained, nervous laugh escaped the therapist's lips as he tried to regain his composure.

"Mark? Have you lost your mind?" Vance hissed. "She is a patient! The protocol requires complete isolation! If you interfere with this extraction, your contract is terminated, and you'll lose everything!"

"The contract is already broken, Alan," Mark replied coldly, striding across the room with purposeful steps. "You took it too far. You brought the kids into this facility when the agreement was strictly about Clara's isolation."

Clara watched in stunned disbelief from the examination table. The man standing before her was neither the cold, abandoning husband from the kitchen nor the emotionless actor Vance had just described. He was someone else entirely—a man caught in a dangerous web of deception that he was now aggressively tearing apart.

"Mark!" Clara cried out, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "Untie me! Please, untie me!"

Mark didn't hesitate. He rushed to the side of the table, pulling a heavy-duty pocket knife from his jeans and slicing rapidly through the leather restraints binding her wrists and ankles. Clara immediately sat up, rubbing her sore arms as Mark helped her slide off the table. But before they could take a single step toward the shattered doorway, Dr. Vance lunged forward with the scalpel, driving the blade straight toward Mark's shoulder with blinding speed.
