Chapter 4 - The Unwelcome Visitor

Clara’s breath caught in her throat as she peered through the gap in the closet door. Standing in the master bedroom was a tall man in a sharp charcoal suit, a thin wire earpiece tucked discreetly into his right ear. It was Dr. Alan Vance, Mark’s longtime family therapist—the very man who had supposedly signed off on her fictitious psychiatric evaluation. Vance stood calmly by the dresser, casually flipping through a stack of unopened mail as if he owned the property. Clara’s blood boiled with a lethal combination of terror and outrage. The conspiracy ran deeper than she had ever imagined; her husband's therapist was actively colluding with him to dismantle her life and strip away her maternal rights.
"Looking for something, Doctor?" Clara asked, stepping out of the closet with the forged evaluation papers clutched tightly in her hand.
Dr. Vance did not flinch, nor did he look surprised. A thin, condescending smile curved the corners of his mouth as he slowly turned to face her, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with deliberate slowness.
"Clara. I was told you were resting," Vance said smoothly, his tone dripping with patronizing calm. "Mark is deeply concerned about your stability. Finding you hiding in the closet rather confirms our worst assessments."
"Don't you dare play games with me," Clara snapped, stepping forward and thrusting the forged evaluation into his chest. "I know this is a complete fabrication. My signature is forged, and you are violating every medical ethic in the book by helping Mark steal my children and my money!"
Dr. Vance glanced down at the paper without touching it. He let out a soft, pitying sigh that infuriated Clara even more.
"Clara, denial is a predictable stage of the regression," Vance replied smoothly. "Mark only wants what is best for Toby and Lily. A household characterized by your erratic episodes is no environment for young children."
"Where are they?" Clara demanded, her voice rising as she closed the distance between them. "Where did Mark take my kids?"
"For your own safety, that information is strictly restricted," Vance said, taking a measured step backward toward the bedroom door. "I strongly advise you not to contact legal counsel or make a scene. It will only force the court to issue a permanent restraining order, cutting off all visitation indefinitely."
Before Clara could lunge forward to block his path, Vance spun on his heel and strode rapidly down the hallway. The front door clicked shut just as Clara reached the living room. She collapsed onto the sofa, trembling with rage and helplessness. The system was rigged against her, weaponizing fabricated medical records to paint her as unstable. She looked across the living room toward the dining table where the plate of pasta had been sitting earlier. The plate was gone, but in its place lay a single, folded piece of paper left behind by Vance.

Clara picked up the note with trembling fingers and unfolded it. Scrawled in neat, clinical handwriting was a single address on the outskirts of the city, accompanied by a stark, chilling ultimatum.
