Chapter 13 - The Rooftop Confrontation

The freezing night wind whipped wildly across the expansive concrete rooftop, carrying the deafening roar of a twin-engine helicopter idling near the far ledge. Floodlights from the aircraft illuminated the rain-slicked surface in blinding white beams. Standing near the open cabin door of the helicopter was Dr. Alan Vance, his charcoal suit coat flapping violently in the gale. Beside him stood two masked security operatives, holding Lily and Toby firmly by their arms. Little Lily was crying softly into her hands, while Toby stared blankly ahead with that same unsettling, vacant expression. Clara stepped out onto the roof behind Mark, the wind tearing the breath right out of her lungs.
"Stop right there, Mark!" Dr. Vance shouted over the deafening roar of the rotors, holding up a remote detonator in his right hand. "One more step and the charges wired to the stairwell blow us all straight to hell!"
Mark froze, lowering the barrel of his assault rifle just an inch. He kept his eyes locked on Vance, his voice carrying clearly across the windy expanse.
"Let the kids go, Alan. The experiment is over. The facility is compromised, and the authorities are already tracking this coordinate."
"The authorities work for me, Mark!" Vance laughed bitterly, his glasses flashing in the helicopter's floodlights. "This was never just a local behavioral study; it's a multi-state cognitive conditioning network. And you were my most successful operative until Clara ruined the baseline parameters."
Clara stepped out from behind Mark, her fists clenched so tightly her fingernails dug deep into her palms. She glared at Vance with unbridled hatred, her voice cutting sharply through the roar of the engines.
"You sick bastard," Clara shouted, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. "You ruined my family, you stole my life, and you weaponized my children!"
"You were never a mother, Clara," Vance sneered, motioning to the operatives to pull Lily closer to the open helicopter door. "You were simply a subject in a closed-loop simulation. And now, the simulation is terminating."

Vance pressed a button on the remote in his hand. Instantly, a series of muffled explosions echoed from deep within the stairwell behind them, followed by the sound of collapsing concrete. The exit route was sealed. They were trapped on the roof with no way down and no way out, as Vance backed slowly into the helicopter cabin, pulling Lily and Toby in behind him as the pilot prepared for immediate takeoff.
