Chapter 5 - The Abandoned Clinic

The address on Vance’s note led Clara far past the suburban neighborhoods into the desolate industrial outskirts of the city, where crumbling brick warehouses loomed like decaying monuments against the gray evening sky. Clara parked her sedan a block away from the destination—a dilapidated, long-abandoned psychiatric clinic bearing a faded sign that read St. Jude’s Outreach Center. The windows were blackened with grime, and the surrounding chain-link fence hung loosely from rusted posts. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she killed the engine, stepping out into the biting wind. Mark had brought the children here, or worse, this was where Vance planned to lock her away permanently to silence her forever.

Clara crept cautiously toward a side entrance of the facility, her boots crunching softly on gravel and shattered glass. The heavy metal fire door was unlocked, yielding with a dull, echoing creak when she pushed against it. The interior smelled sharply of mold, dust, and old antiseptic, a chilling reminder of the medical conspiracy closing in around her. A dim yellow emergency light flickered at the end of the long, narrow corridor, casting long, writhing shadows along the peeling wallpaper.

"Hello?" Clara called out, her voice trembling in the vast, empty space. "Lily? Toby?"

Only the hollow echo of her own voice answered her. She navigated the labyrinthine hallways, passing abandoned examination rooms with rusted dental chairs and shattered supply cabinets. As she approached the central atrium, she heard the faint, distinct sound of a child crying softly. It was Lily’s voice, unmistakable and muffled through a heavy oak door marked Director’s Office. Clara rushed forward, ignoring the shrieking protest of her instincts, and grabbed the brass doorknob. It turned freely. She threw the door open, ready to confront Mark, but stopped dead in her tracks.

The room was completely empty of people, save for a small, old-fashioned tape recorder sitting on the mahogany desk in the center of the room. The reels were spinning slowly, playing a looping audio file of Lily crying out, “I was hungry, daddy. I was hungry, daddy.”

Clara stared at the spinning reels in horror, realizing the entire morning encounter in the kitchen had been pre-recorded to manipulate Mark into a blind panic.

Suddenly, the heavy oak door slammed shut behind her with a deafening thud, followed by the heavy clunk of a deadbolt sliding into place from the outside. Clara spun around, throwing her weight against the wood and screaming in panic.

"Let me out! Who's out there?"

A cold, mechanical voice echoed from a small ceiling speaker above the desk.

"The diagnostic procedure is complete, Clara. Welcome home."
