Chapter 12 - The Empty Cage

Clara froze on the threshold of the holding room, her breath hitching in her throat as she stared at the empty cot. The small, yellow dress Lily had been wearing earlier in the kitchen was draped neatly across the mattress like an abandoned skin, alongside Toby’s blue t-shirt. There were no children in the room, no signs of struggle, just the chilling realization that they had been moved moments before their arrival. Clara rushed across the small space and grabbed the envelope resting on the bedding. She ripped the flap open with trembling fingers, pulling out a single sheet of heavy cardstock covered in neat, chilling handwriting.

"They're gone," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as tears spilled over her lashes. "Mark, they took them again."

Mark stepped into the room, his chest heaving as he looked down at the empty clothes. He snatched the note from Clara’s hands and scanned the lines written in Dr. Vance's clinical script. “If you want to see the children again, come to the rooftop helipad alone. The experiment reaches its final termination phase.” Mark crushed the paper into a tight ball in his fist, his jaw clenching so hard the muscle twitched violently.

"We're going to the roof," Mark declared, his tone cold and absolute.

"How do we know this isn't another trap?" Clara asked, grabbing his jacket sleeve. "Vance is playing with us. He's manipulating every move we make!"

"It's a trap, Clara. Of course it's a trap," Mark replied, looking directly into her eyes with fierce determination. "But it's the only way to get our kids back. I'm done running from his games. Are you coming with me, or do you stay here?"

Clara wiped the tears from her cheeks, hardening her resolve. The fear that had paralyzed her earlier in the kitchen evaporated, replaced by a mother's lethal fury. She reached into the open wall locker near the doorway, pulling a heavy tactical flashlight and a sharp hunting knife, tucking the blade securely into the waistband of her black pants.

"Lead the way," Clara said firmly.

They raced toward the central stairwell at the end of the subterranean corridor, pushing open the heavy metal fire door and beginning the grueling climb up the concrete steps. Every level they ascended brought them closer to the freezing night air and the final confrontation with Dr. Alan Vance. The echoes of their boots bounced off the bare walls, rhythmic and unrelenting. As they reached the final landing, a heavy steel door marked Roof Access stood slightly ajar, a harsh gust of wind whistling through the gap and carrying the distant, distinct sound of a helicopter rotor spinning up to speed.

Mark gestured for Clara to stay low. He drew his captured assault rifle, flicking the safety off with a soft metallic click, and slowly pushed the heavy door wide open.
