Chapter 14 - The Final Ascent

The helicopter skids shuddered against the wet concrete of the rooftop as the pilot revved the turbine engines to maximum power, generating a gale-force wind that nearly knocked Clara off her feet. Dr. Alan Vance stood inside the open cabin door, a triumphant, sneering smile plastered across his face as he held the locking mechanism of the cabin shut. Little Lily screamed out, stretching her small arms toward Clara through the widening gap between the aircraft and the roof.

"Mom! Daddy! Help me!" Lily’s desperate cry cut straight through the deafening roar of the rotors.

"Toby!" Clara screamed, lunging forward despite the violent wind pushing her back.

Toby turned his head slightly, breaking his vacant stare for a fraction of a second. A strange, knowing smirk crossed the boy's face, entirely inappropriate for a frightened child, before Vance pulled him fully inside the cabin and slammed the heavy aluminum door shut with a resounding thud. The helicopter lifted off the concrete, hovering precariously in the freezing air before banking sharply toward the dark skyline of the city.

Mark didn't hesitate for a single second. He sprinted toward the edge of the helipad, raising his assault rifle and firing three rapid rounds directly into the tail rotor housing of the departing aircraft. Sparks showered violently from the tail assembly as the metal shredded itself apart under the gunfire, throwing the helicopter into a sickening, erratic spin that sent it careening back down toward the far corner of the industrial yard.

"Hold on!" Mark yelled, grabbing Clara by the waist and pulling her flat against the concrete as the shockwave of the aircraft's emergency descent reverberated across the rooftop.

A deafening crash echoed from below, followed by a massive plume of black smoke and orange flames erupting into the night sky as the helicopter collided with an empty warehouse annex. Clara stared in absolute horror at the burning wreckage, her chest seizing as the suffocating reality of what she had just witnessed crashed down upon her. Her children were down there in that burning ruin. Mark dropped his empty rifle, falling to his knees as the flames painted his strained face in flickering hues of orange and red.

"No... no, no, no," Mark muttered, clutching his head in his hands as he stared at the fire.

Clara slowly pushed herself up from the concrete, her limbs heavy and numb. The wind had died down to a low, mournful howl. She walked slowly toward the edge of the roof, looking down at the smoking wreckage below. There was no movement in the flames, no sound of rescue sirens in the distance. The conspiracy that had started with a plate of cold pasta in a bright suburban kitchen had ended here in fire and ash.

Or so she thought.

As Clara turned away from the ledge to console Mark, a soft, familiar sound echoed from the dark stairwell access door behind them—a quiet, rhythmic humming tune that chilled the blood in her veins.
