Chapter 10 - The Hidden Arsenal

The sickening sound of steel tearing through fabric and flesh echoed sharply inside the sterile ward. Mark grunted in pain, stumbling back a step as Dr. Vance pulled the bloody scalpel free for a second strike. Clara screamed, grabbing a heavy metal IV pole from beside the examination table and swinging it with all her remaining strength directly across Vance's back. The therapist crashed hard into the stainless-steel instrument tray, sending surgical tools clattering in every direction before he crumpled unconscious to the floor.

Mark pressed his hand against his shoulder, wincing as dark blood seeped rapidly through the fabric of his dark jacket. He turned to Clara, his expression a turbulent mix of guilt and frantic urgency.

"We don't have much time," Mark panted, struggling to catch his breath. "The facility guards will be here within seconds once they override the lockdown."

"You lied to me," Clara said, stepping back from him, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and betrayal. "Vance said you were an actor. He said Mark and Toby were just part of an experiment! Who are you, really?"

"There's no time for this now, Clara!" Mark insisted, grabbing her by the wrist and pulling her toward the shattered doorway. "I am Mark. I am your husband. Everything Vance told you in that office was a psychological projection designed to break your mind so you'd sign away your guardianship rights to the estate trust. The actors... the actors were Vance's operatives pretending to be my family to push me away from you."

Clara’s mind spun, but survival instinct drowned out the swirling confusion. She allowed him to pull her out into the dimly lit hallway, the blaring red emergency strobe painting the walls in blood-red hues. They raced down the corridor, dodging empty examination rooms until Mark kicked open a heavy maintenance door marked Authorized Personnel Only. Inside was not a utility closet, but a massive, subterranean armory filled with tactical gear, computer mainframes, and digital surveillance monitors displaying live feeds of every room in the facility.

Clara gasped as she looked at the central monitor screen. Sitting in a secured holding room down the hall were Lily and Toby, huddled together on a small cot, looking terrified but unharmed.

"The kids," Clara whispered, pressing her hands against the cold glass of the monitor display. "We have to get them out right now."

"We will," Mark said grimly, opening a heavy metal wall locker filled with tactical firearms and riot gear. He pulled out a heavy-duty master keycard and shoved it into his jacket pocket. "But to get them out, we need to know who's really running this syndicate. And the master control room is directly beneath us, guarded by Vance's personal security detail."

Before Mark could grab a weapon from the locker, the steel door behind them was violently kicked open, and three armed security guards rushed into the armory with assault rifles raised.
