Chapter 7

Julian froze, his hands dropping slowly from his head as he stared at the operative's outstretched finger. The amber emergency lights flickered, casting long, fractured shadows across the ruined dining room.

"Me?" Julian's voice was a harsh whisper, devoid of its usual authority. "What do you mean, host anchor?"

"Formulation 9 cannot exist independently in a biological organism without a stabilizing frequency," the lead operative explained, the synthesized voice cutting through the ambient hum of the estate's locked security grid. "The child's nervous system has accepted the compound, but her biological firewall is rejecting the primary code. It requires a direct familial bridge to complete the synthesis without fatal systemic failure."

Elena grabbed Julian's tuxedo lapel, her knuckles white with terror. "Julian, don't listen to them! Whatever they want you to do, it's a trick! They want to use you as a guinea pig for whatever weapon they've built!"

"If I don't, Lily dies," Julian said simply. He looked down at his daughter, whose arm was now glowing with an intense, steady emerald light that illuminated her tear-streaked face. The fern-like patterns had spread up past her shoulder toward her neck.

"Mommy, I'm cold," Lily whispered, her small body shivering despite the warmth of the glowing bioluminescence.

Elena pulled the child closer, burying her face in Lily's blonde hair as silent tears finally broke free. "We'll find another way. There has to be a medical team, an antidote—"

"There is no antidote," the lead operative interrupted, stepping closer with the cylindrical device. "The compound is designed to be irreversible once integrated. You have thirty seconds to initiate the bridge protocol, Mr. Vance, or the child's heart will stop."

Julian didn't hesitate any longer. He looked at Elena, his eyes carrying a heavy, sorrowful finality that told her everything words could not. "Take care of her, Elena. Whatever happens after this, make sure she remembers who we were."

Before Elena could scream a protest, Julian reached out and pressed his bare hand directly against Lily's glowing shoulder, right over the pulsing green lines.

A blinding flash of emerald light erupted from the point of contact, filling the room with a sharp, ozone-scented snap. Julian gasped, his body stiffening as a violent tremor coursed through his limbs, his own veins lighting up in a brilliant matching green network from his fingers all the way up his neck.
