Chapter 13

The heavy mechanical locks on the front doors slammed home with a resounding, metallic finality. Elena spun around, dropping the dead smartphone onto the foyer floor as she rushed toward the heavy mahogany panels. She threw her weight against them, pounding her fists desperately against the solid wood.

"Let me out! Open this door!" she screamed, her voice cracking with exhaustion and terror.

There was no answer, save for the low, rhythmic hum of the estate's bio-reactive grid pulsing through the walls beneath her feet. The glowing green lines on the hardwood had reached the baseboards, climbing upward in delicate, intricate patterns that encased the front entrance in a shimmering emerald cage.

Elena backed away slowly, her breathing ragged as she realized she was completely trapped inside the epicenter of the network. The air in the foyer tasted crisp, smelling faintly of ozone and crushed leaves—the signature scent of Formulation 9.

She turned and walked back toward the dining room, her mind racing for an escape route, a tool, a weapon, anything to fight back against the invisible machine that had swallowed her family. The white marble table stood under the ruined crystal chandelier, the crystallized green stain glowing with a steady, pulsating light that seemed to track her movements across the room.

On the floor near the broken glass, something caught her eye—a small, silver flash amidst the debris. Elena knelt down, brushing away the glittering crystal shards to reveal Julian's backup access key fob, dropped during the initial breach.

She picked it up, pressing the physical override button on the side. The fob flickered once with a weak amber light before a tiny digital display on its surface lit up, displaying a countdown timer: 03:45... 03:44...

A self-destruct sequence. Julian had installed a failsafe into the hardware years ago, believing it was just corporate security protocol. If the grid was ever compromised beyond recovery, the master terminal could be purged with a thermal detonation.

Elena gripped the fob tightly, her thumb resting over the physical trigger switch. She knew what it meant. If she triggered the purge, the estate—and everyone inside it—would be erased from the grid permanently.

Before her thumb could press down, the dining room speaker crackled to life, and Julian's voice echoed through the room.
