Chapter 1

The pristine white marble surface of the dining table absorbed the vibrant, unnatural fluid with terrifying speed. Seven-year-old Lily stared at the spreading stain in sheer bewilderment, her small hand frozen mid-air after knocking the heavy crystal glass over.
"Oops," Lily whispered softly, her blue eyes wide with innocent regret as she looked up at the adults flanking her.
Elena jolted upright in her shimmering silver silk dress, her pearl necklace trembling against her collarbone. She gasped sharply, staring wide-eyed at the glowing green liquid creeping perilously close to the antique silver settings.
"Lily, what on earth were you reaching for?" Elena demanded, her voice cracking with sudden, erratic panic. "You know that table is antique! Why weren't you paying attention?"
Across the table, Julian did not look up immediately from his dark tuxedo jacket. He remained hunched over his smartphone, his face illuminated by a sickly, pale glare. The screen showed a series of rapid, cryptic notifications that seemed to drain every ounce of color from his sixty-year-old face. His hands shook subtly as his thumb dragged down to refresh a live feed.
"Look at this," Julian murmured, his voice hollow and detached, ignoring the spreading mess entirely.
Elena whipped her head toward him, her breath hitching in her throat as she registered the profound terror etched into his features. "Julian, stop looking at that phone! The liquid—it’s destroying the family heirloom, and the smell is changing. Look at it!"
Elena looked down at the tabletop, where the bright green liquid was no longer just spreading; it was visibly bubbling, emitting a faint, noxious hiss against the polished stone. Panic seized her chest, freezing her limbs.

Elena looked up with wide, fearful eyes, speaking with tense urgency. "Nobody touch that."
Julian slowly raised his head, staring past Elena as the front security alarm began to chime a low, deafening warning tone.
