Chapter 4

The shattering of the glass echoed like a gunshot through the sprawling dining room. Lily screamed, a high, piercing sound that finally broke the heavy restraint Julian and Elena had desperately maintained. Elena dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms around the trembling seven-year-old, shielding the child's face against her shoulder.
The figure who stepped through the broken doors wore a matte black tactical uniform devoid of any insignia, insignia patches, or identifying markers. Over the lower half of their face, they wore a specialized respirator mask that hissed rhythmically with every intake of air. In their gloved hands, they held a compact, non-lethal aerosol projector, though the barrel was pointedly aimed at the floor near the crystallized green stain.
"Stay back," Julian ordered, stepping deliberately in front of Elena and Lily, his tall frame trembling despite his rigid posture. "Identify yourselves. This is private property. I demand to speak to the director."
The masked operative did not speak. Instead, a second and third figure filed silently through the ruined doorway, securing the perimeters of the room with clinical efficiency. One of them knelt beside the marble table, pulling a small digital spectrometer from a thigh pouch to scan the dried residue of the green liquid.
"Diagnostic confirmed," a synthesized, modulated voice issued from the lead operative's respirator. "Subject zero containment verified. Initiating secondary protocol."
Elena looked up from where she shielded Lily, her eyes burning with a fierce, protective fury. "She's just a child! It was an accident! You can't do this—this is kidnapping! We have rights!"
The lead operative slowly turned their visor toward Elena. The lenses were pitch black, reflecting only the amber emergency lights and the terrified family. "Rights were relinquished the moment the compound was exposed to an uncontrolled atmosphere. Mr. Vance, your company's bio-seal division designed the containment parameters. Surely you recognize your own architecture?"

Julian flinched, stepping half a pace back as the realization settled heavily over him. "The Vanguard Project... you're not here for a breach. You're here to harvest the test results."
The operative raised a small, cylindrical device toward Julian's chest, pressing a blinking button that emitted a sharp, high-pitched whine.
