Chapter 12

The incoming video call on Julian's smartphone pulsed with a steady, hypnotic emerald light. Elena's finger hovered over the glass screen, her breath catching in her throat as the ringing tone echoed loudly in the silent, ruined dining room. She tapped the accept icon, her hands trembling violently.

The screen flickered, replacing the county schematic with the sharp, clinical image of a woman sitting in a sleek, high-tech control room. Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe bun, and her eyes—unmistakably—shone with the same pale green luminescence that had overtaken Julian.

"Mrs. Vance," the woman spoke, her voice calm, modulated, and carrying that identical dual-frequency resonance. "I am Director Sterling. We have been expecting you to access the master terminal."

Elena gripped the edges of the phone so hard her knuckles turned white. "Where is my husband? Where is my daughter? If you've hurt them, I swear I will tear your entire network apart piece by piece."

Director Sterling offered a faint, chillingly polite smile that didn't reach her glowing eyes. "Hurt them? Mrs. Vance, they are the cornerstone of the new paradigm. Formulation 9 wasn't a weapon; it was an evolutionary catalyst. For decades, humanity has been fractured by fear, chaos, and unpredictability. Your husband and your daughter are now part of a unified consciousness that spans across four hundred estates in this sector alone."

"They're people, not software!" Elena screamed, hot tears streaming down her face as she slammed her fist against the white marble table, right beside the crystallized green stain. "Give them back to me!"

"They belong to the network now, Elena," Sterling replied smoothly. "And soon, so will you. The atmospheric saturation in your zip code has reached ninety-eight percent. The structural polymers in your home have already begun to process your personal biometrics through the floorboards."

Elena looked down. The hardwood floor beneath her bare feet was emitting a faint, rhythmic pulse, glowing with delicate green lines that mirrored the fern pattern on Lily's arm.

"You can't force this on the entire world," Elena whispered, horror gripping her chest as she backed away toward the foyer.

"We aren't forcing anything," Sterling said, her voice turning cold and absolute. "We are simply completing the design your husband spent five years perfecting."

The screen abruptly went black as the phone's battery indicator flashed red, and a loud, mechanical lock engaged on the front door behind her.
