Chapter 10

The concussive static pulse hung in the air like a heavy, invisible fog, pinning Elena's limbs in place. She could see, she could think, but her muscles refused to obey her commands. She stood frozen beside the white marble table, her hands clutching Lily's shoulders, while the little girl drifted into a heavy, unnatural slumber against her side.

Julian watched her struggle, his expression remaining an impassive mask of cold logic. He didn't blink, and his breathing remained entirely steady, devoid of the natural cadence of a living, panicked human.

"Don't fight it, Elena," Julian said, his voice echoing in the dead silence of the room. "The paralytic is calibrated to your exact neurological baseline. It will wear off in precisely forty-two minutes. By then, the initial phase of the synchronization will be complete, and the estate will be off the grid."

The lead operative motioned toward two masked subordinates, who stepped forward and gently lifted the sleeping Lily from Elena's paralyzed grip, carrying her toward the waiting black vehicles outside.

Elena's eyes widened with a silent scream of pure agony. She tried to force her vocal cords to work, but only a faint, raspy breath escaped her lips. Tears spilled over her eyelashes, tracing hot paths down her pale cheeks as she watched her daughter being carried away into the dense, fog-filled night.

Julian turned and followed the operatives toward the shattered doorway, his steps falling in perfect, rhythmic synchronization with the humming security grid. He paused just outside the threshold, looking back one last time into the amber-lit dining room.

"You always wanted us to be secure, Elena," Julian said, his voice fading slightly as he crossed the threshold into the damp night air. "Now, nothing can ever hurt us again."

The black vehicles' engines hummed to life with a low, synchronized purr, their headlights cutting sharp, piercing beams through the thick mist as they began to roll down the driveway toward the security gates.

Inside the dining room, the crystallized green stain on the white marble table suddenly flared with a blinding, incandescent burst of light that shattered the remaining crystal glassware into a thousand sparkling fragments.
