Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Ally

The metallic click echoed sharply against the humming server racks, stopping Marcus Sterling mid-swing. Everyone in the sub-level room turned toward the doorway. Standing in the threshold was Derek, out of breath, his neat light brown hair slightly messy, and his hands visibly trembling. But what caught everyone by surprise was what he was holding—not a weapon, but a heavy, master-override service tablet belonging to the hotel's chief network administrator.

“Derek?” Marcus lowered the fire extinguisher slightly, his face twisting in absolute disbelief. “What are you doing down here? You were supposed to stay at the front desk!”

Derek swallowed hard, avoiding Marcus’s furious gaze. He kept his eyes locked on Maya as he stepped cautiously into the room, holding the tablet out like a peace offering.

“I stayed at the desk long enough to realize that loyalty to a sinking ship is just slow suicide, Mr. Sterling,” Derek said, his voice trembling only slightly before steadying with a resolute conviction. He tapped the screen of the tablet, transferring a stream of encrypted packets directly to Maya’s smartphone. “You told me to cover for your cash-booking scheme, Marcus. You told me it was just a perk of managing a five-star property. But you never mentioned that you were draining the employee pension fund to cover your gambling debts.”

Marcus’s face drained of what little color remained. “You lying coward,” he hissed, taking a sudden step forward.

Julian Vance instantly stepped into the gap, raising his flashlight to blind Marcus while his other hand instinctively reached inside his jacket. “Stay back, Sterling. One more aggressive move and you’ll be answering to more than just corporate auditors.”

Maya caught the incoming data packet on her smartphone. The screen flashed a bright green confirmation as the complete financial ledger of the offshore accounts downloaded successfully. She looked up, her gaze steady and piercing as she observed Derek.

“You helped him run the scam, Derek,” Maya said, her tone devoid of warmth, though fair and measured. “That doesn't erase your complicity. But bringing this tablet forward changes how we handle your termination and legal cooperation.”

Derek nodded slowly, looking down at his polished dress shoes in deep shame. “I know, Ms. Richardson. I don’t expect forgiveness. I just... I couldn’t watch you get blamed for exposing something I helped hide.”

Sulli appeared hesitantly in the doorway behind Derek, clutching a printed stack of audit logs she had retrieved from the back office terminal before the blackout. Her eyes were red-rimmed from crying, but her posture was resolute.

“I brought the rest of the physical ledger receipts from the night audits, Ms. Richardson,” Sulli said quietly, stepping forward to hand the papers to Julian. “Marcus threatened to fire us both if we didn't falsify the vacancy reports. But that doesn't excuse what we did. We’re ready to testify before the Zurich board.”

Marcus Sterling let out a bitter, defeated laugh, dropping the heavy fire extinguisher onto the concrete floor with a dull, echoing thud. He slumped against the edge of a server rack, defeated by his own network of lies and the sudden defection of his accomplices.

“You think winning this battle means you’ve won the war, Maya?” Marcus muttered, glaring up from the floor. “The Grand Astoria is just a brick-and-mortar trophy. The real power is upstairs in the penthouse suite.”

Maya frowned, her instincts instantly flaring at his words. Before she could ask what he meant, her smartphone vibrated violently with an emergency alert originating directly from the private penthouse elevator.
