Chapter 2 - The Emergency Interruption

The sharp echo of hurried footsteps sliced through the heavy tension of the Grand Astoria lobby. Julian Vance, senior partner of Vance & Sterling Legal Counsel and the hotel’s permanent penthouse resident, rushed past the stunned bellhops. His tuxedo jacket was unbuttoned, and his usually immaculate hair was slightly disheveled. He did not look like a man enjoying a late-night gala; he looked like a man on a desperate rescue mission.
Derek’s finger hovered over the desk phone, his expression shifting from arrogant amusement to sudden confusion as Julian slammed his palm down on the marble counter, right next to Maya’s reservation papers.
“What on earth do you think you are doing?” Julian demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of exhaustion and cold fury.
Derek swallowed hard, attempting to regain his professional mask. “Mr. Vance, we were just handling a security matter. This individual—this woman—attempted to check into a suite using credentials that clearly don’t match her appearance.”
Maya remained entirely silent, watching Julian with a cool, calculating gaze. She did not look relieved; she looked like an executive waiting for an incompetent employee to finish digging their own grave.
Sulli stepped backward, her hands nervously smoothing down the fabric of her dark blazer. “We only wanted to protect the hotel’s reputation, sir. People of a certain status expect a certain standard.”
Julian turned slowly, fixing Sulli and Derek with a glare so intense it made both clerks physically recoil. He did not yell. His voice dropped to a terrifying, quiet whisper that carried across the entire front desk area.
“Status?” Julian repeated bitterly. “You fools are lecturing the single largest private shareholder of this entire international hospitality conglomerate about her standards of dress.”
The blood drained instantly from Derek’s face. His mouth opened, but no words came out. Sulli clutched her name tag as if it were a life preserver in a freezing ocean.
Maya finally let out a slow, measured breath. She adjusted the strap of her brown leather shoulder bag, stepped closer to the edge of the marble desk, and slowly tapped the screen of her smartphone, illuminating a confidential corporate document that sent a fresh wave of panic through the staff.

“That won’t be necessary, Julian,” Maya said calmly. Then, she turned her gaze back to Derek and tapped a hidden notification on her screen. “Actually, Derek, read the notice that just popped up regarding the emergency board audit scheduled for tonight.”
