Chapter 10 - The Penthouse Intruder

The violent vibration of Maya’s smartphone cut through the hum of the server racks like a physical jolt. She glanced down at the screen, where a high-priority security notification flashed in pulsing amber text: “Unauthorized biometric override detected at Private Penthouse Suite 1401.”

Julian Vance stepped away from Marcus Sterling, his expression hardening into absolute shock. “Suite 1401? That’s impossible. The private biometric scanner requires both my retinal scan and the master corporate executive key that Maya is carrying right now.”

Marcus let out another low, dark chuckle from where he sat against the server rack. “You really think I was stupid enough to keep all the leverage in the basement, Mr. Vance? Some doors in this hotel open for more than just corporate credentials.”

Maya did not waste a single second arguing with him. She turned sharply on her heel, her sneakers gripping the concrete floor as she sprinted back toward the stairwell. “Julian, secure Sterling and call local precinct dispatch. Derek, Sulli, stay right here and lock down the physical terminals.”

“Maya, wait!” Julian called out, but she was already bounding up the first flight of concrete stairs with athletic precision, her brown leather shoulder bag slung securely across her body.

The emergency red strobe lights flashed rhythmically as she flew up the steps, her breathing steady and controlled despite the intense physical exertion. She reached the main lobby level in record time, bypassed the stunned bellhops who were still whispering among themselves in the dim light, and punched the private VIP elevator override button with her encrypted smartphone.

The polished brass doors slid open instantly. Maya stepped inside, swiping her master card against the hidden wall sensor. The elevator shot upward at breakneck speed, bypassing floors with a smooth, silent acceleration that left her stomach momentarily weightless.

During the rapid ascent, she pulled up the live security feed of the penthouse suite on her phone. The camera angle showed the grand mahogany double doors of Suite 1401 standing slightly ajar. Inside the sprawling, glass-walled penthouse overlooking the glittering New York City skyline, a tall, shadowy figure in a dark trench coat was rummaging rapidly through the antique mahogany writing desk where the original corporate deeds to the Grand Astoria were safely stored.

The elevator dinged softly, signaling arrival at the fourteenth floor. The doors slid open to reveal the dimly lit private foyer of the penthouse.

Maya stepped out into the quiet hallway. Her footsteps made no sound on the thick wool carpeting. She approached the open double doors of Suite 1401, her heart beating steadily, her mind entirely focused.

She pushed the door open wider, stepping into the luxurious suite. The intruder froze instantly, standing beside the glowing fireplace with a heavy leather portfolio clutched tightly in his gloved hands. As the intruder slowly turned around to face her, the soft moonlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows illuminated his face, revealing an unexpected identity that changed everything.
