Chapter 1 - The Glass Wall of Prejudice

The sprawling marble lobby of the Grand Astoria Hotel hummed with the muted, exclusive sounds of absolute wealth. Crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, unforgiving glow across the pristine reception desk, where the nighttime air felt chilled by design. Maya stood firmly on the plush Persian rug, her fingers wrapped tightly around the strap of her brown leather shoulder bag. She wore a simple white button-down shirt, classic blue jeans, and clean sneakers. To the staff, she looked like an anomaly.
Derek, the clean-shaven male clerk with neat light brown hair, stared down at her with a look of undisguised contempt. His dark suit and tie screamed corporate authority, but his posture reeked of small-minded arrogance.
“Look at yourself, Maya,” Derek said, his voice dripping with an aggressive, sharp condescension that cut through the ambient jazz music. “This is a five-star hotel, not a shelter for people pretending they belong.”
Maya did not flinch. She kept her breathing steady, her dark eyes locked onto his with quiet defiance. She slid her smartphone and a crisp printed confirmation paper across the polished white marble surface.
“My reservation is confirmed,” Maya said firmly, her voice carrying a calm, unshakable authority that made several nearby bellhops pause.
Across the wide counter, the Asian female clerk with short dark hair—whose name tag read Sulli—leaned in close. Sulli narrowed her eyes, studying Maya with a mix of suspicion and open judgment.
“Derek, come on,” Sulli said critically, shaking her head. “The real Maya Richardson would not walk in here dressed like she lost a fight with a thrift store.”
Maya looked up, maintaining direct, unyielding eye contact. The air in the lobby grew thick with tension. Derek picked up the phone, sneering as he tapped the screen.
“Let’s see what security says when I report a squatter,” Derek muttered, dialing the internal office.

Before the call could connect, the lobby’s main revolving glass doors spun open, and a breathless man in an expensive tailored tuxedo sprinted inside, shouting Maya’s full name.
