Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the System

The electronic chime cut through the tense silence of the lobby like a surgeon’s scalpel. Derek stared at his computer monitor, his eyes widening in sudden, panicked confusion. The screen had abruptly overridden the property management software, flashing a series of high-priority security warnings in bright crimson text.
“What is that?” Julian demanded, stopping mid-step and turning sharply back toward the desk. He strode across the Persian rug, his leather shoes clicking sharply on the floor. “Derek, what system alert just overrode the central terminal?”
Derek’s fingers flew frantically across the keyboard, but every keystroke was met with a crisp, error-denied beep. Sweat beaded heavily along his hairline, contrasting sharply with his neat light brown hair and clean-shaved face.
“I—I don’t know, Mr. Vance,” Derek stammered, his voice cracking with panic. “It’s not an internal hotel alert. It’s an external override originating from the corporate security mainframe in Geneva. Someone is locking down our entire guest registry and financial ledger.”
Sulli gasped, gripping the edge of the dark marble counter for balance. Her professional composure had completely evaporated, leaving only raw, naked fear. “Geneva? But the European compliance team doesn’t audit us on weekdays. Unless… unless someone flagged our terminal specifically.”
Maya walked back toward the desk, her expression unreadable. She placed her brown leather shoulder bag down and rested her hand gently on the edge of the counter. The bright lobby lights reflected off her dark hair as she leaned in to look at the scrolling code on the monitor.
“They didn’t just flag our terminal, Sulli,” Maya said quietly, her voice chillingly calm. “They flagged your specific login ID. And Derek’s.”
Julian frowned, leaning over Derek’s shoulder to inspect the scrolling data stream. Lines of encrypted text flashed past, detailing manual overrides, deleted reservation timestamps, and a series of unauthorized charges applied to vacant suites over the past six months.
“This isn’t just about poor customer service or racial profiling,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register. He shot a piercing glare at the two clerks. “You two haven’t just been turning away guests based on their appearance. You’ve been running an underground cash-booking scheme using empty VIP rooms.”
Derek slammed his palms onto the desk, his face turning pale. “No! That’s a complete lie! The system is glitching! Anyone can hack into these old terminals if the firewall is compromised!”
“The firewall was updated yesterday by my personal cybersecurity team,” Maya replied smoothly, pulling her smartphone from her pocket and tapping the screen once. Instantly, the terminal monitor in front of Derek beeped, displaying a split-screen video feed of the hotel’s secondary cash register in the back office.
The video clearly showed Derek stuffing a thick wad of hundred-dollar bills into his suit jacket pocket just three hours earlier, while Sulli stood guard by the door.
The lobby fell into a suffocating silence. Sulli slowly covered her mouth with her hands, trembling violently as the reality of their impending ruin sank in.
“The board audit isn’t just starting in ten minutes,” Maya whispered, slipping her phone back into her hand as she met Derek’s terrified gaze. “It started the moment you decided to insult the person holding the master decryption keys. Now, step away from the terminal.”

Derek stood up slowly, defeated, but as he moved away, the computer screen flashed one final time, revealing a disturbing message from an unknown sender inside the hotel.
