Chapter 6 - The Call from the Shadow Board

The harsh ringing of Marcus Sterling’s personal cell phone pierced the tense quiet of the Grand Astoria lobby like a blaring alarm. The digital display flashed a restricted international number—the direct line to the Zurich-based oversight committee that controlled the ultimate financial destiny of the hotel group.

Marcus slowly withdrew his hand from his suit jacket, his fingers hovering over the vibrating phone as if it were a venomous snake. His immaculate composure was fracturing, revealing a sheen of cold sweat along his clean-shaven jawline.

“Aren't you going to answer that, Marcus?” Maya asked calmly, her hands resting lightly on the marble counter. She tilted her head, maintaining direct, unyielding eye contact. “Or are you afraid that answering it will confirm every single suspicion we have about your little underground enterprise here?”

Julian Vance stepped in closer, blocking Marcus’s path toward the revolving exit doors. “You’re cornered, Sterling. The corporate mainframe logged your IP address the moment you tried to override the terminal lockdown. Put the phone on speaker, or security will physically escort you off the premises right now.”

Marcus cast a desperate, venomous glance toward Derek and Sulli, who cowered near the back office door. He then forced a tight, rigid smile back onto his face and slid his thumb across the screen, accepting the call.

“Sterling speaking,” Marcus said, his voice regaining a veneer of forced corporate authority.

A sharp, heavily accented voice boomed through the phone's speaker, instantly filling the quiet lobby with an unmistakable aura of absolute power. “Mr. Sterling. This is Director Von Klaus. We have received an emergency telemetry report from the Grand Astoria terminal indicating massive financial discrepancies, unauthorized guest exclusions, and a severe breach of corporate ethics under your direct supervision.”

Derek let out a soft, terrified gasp, sinking slowly against the wood-paneled wall behind the desk. Sulli squeezed her eyes shut, silent tears finally slipping down her cheeks.

Marcus clenched his jaw so hard his facial muscles twitched. “Director, there is a technical anomaly occurring. Certain individuals are attempting to manipulate the property management software to—"

“Silence,” Von Klaus commanded coldly from Zurich. “We are not interested in fabricated excuses. Ms. Maya Richardson is standing right in front of you. She holds the ultimate executive proxy for this property. Any obstruction of her audit will result in immediate criminal referral and asset forfeiture.”

Marcus stared across the counter at Maya. The realization that the woman he had mentally dismissed as a vagrant or a confused trespasser was actually the majority stakeholder’s direct proxy hit him like a physical blow.

“Ms. Richardson,” Marcus began, his voice straining as he tried to claw back a shred of dignity. “I assure you, whatever mistakes were made at the front desk were unauthorized rogue actions by junior staff members. I had no knowledge of—"

“You signed off on every cash-room allocation ledger for the past six months, Marcus,” Maya interrupted smoothly. She reached into her brown leather shoulder bag, pulled out a thick manila folder filled with printed financial audits, and tossed it onto the marble counter right beside his silver coffee tray. “I didn’t just walk in here tonight by accident. My team has been tracking your offshore shell company accounts in the Caymans for three weeks.”

Marcus stared at the folder, the color entirely draining from his face. But before anyone else could speak, the lobby’s security monitors suddenly flickered off, plunging the reception area into sudden, chaotic darkness.
