Chapter 13 - The Final Override

The high-pitched, staccato beep echoed from the master security control panel embedded in the walnut-paneled wall of the penthouse suite. Julian paused, turning his head sharply away from the officers leading his brother toward the exit. He frowned, stepping across the room to inspect the flashing amber screen.

“That’s strange,” Julian muttered, tapping the glass interface. “The master security panel should be locked down pending police seizure. Why is the primary server hub attempting an automatic data format?”

Maya crossed the room in two swift strides, standing beside Julian. She stared at the scrolling code on the screen. The interface wasn’t running a standard deletion script; it was executing a deep-level factory reset triggered by an external hardware key connected directly to the hotel’s main communications trunk line in the sub-basement.

“It’s not an automatic format,” Maya said, her voice dropping into a tone of sharp realization. “Someone is still down there in the server room. Someone who knew Richard and Marcus were just the public face of this operation.”

Julian’s eyes widened. “You mean there’s a third person? Someone higher up in the corporate syndicate?”

Before Maya could answer, her smartphone buzzed with an incoming encrypted message from Derek, still stationed down in the sub-level. She tapped the screen, reading the text aloud in the quiet penthouse: “Someone just bypassed the security shutter in the server corridor. They’re locking the vault doors from the inside. It’s corporate legal counsel... it’s Victoria Vance.”

Julian stepped back as if he had been physically struck. “Victoria? Our cousin? No... that’s impossible. She’s the head of global compliance in Zurich. She’s the one who authorized the independent audit in the first place!”

“She authorized the audit to frame Marcus and Richard so she could absorb their assets and take full control of the entire hospitality group without a paper trail leading back to her,” Maya explained logically, her dark eyes flashing with resolute determination. She turned sharply toward the private elevator. “Julian, stay here with the police and secure the penthouse evidence. I’m going back down to the sub-level.”

“Maya, you can’t go down there alone,” Julian insisted, stepping forward to block her path. “Victoria’s legal team is ruthless. If she’s cornered the server room, she won’t hesitate to destroy everything.”

“That’s why I won’t be alone,” Maya said calmly. She tapped her phone once, activating an open speaker channel connected directly to the lobby security desk, where a dozen off-duty corporate security officers and local precinct reinforcements had just arrived. “Attention all units. Secure every exit of the sub-level service corridor. Nobody enters, and nobody leaves.”

As Maya stepped into the private elevator and pressed the button for the basement level, the elevator doors closed smoothly, sealing her inside with the quiet hum of the descending motor. But just as the car reached the third floor down, the lights inside flickered, and the emergency brake engaged with a violent, jarring screech, trapping her between floors in total darkness.
