Chapter 7 - The Pitch-Black Confession

The sudden plunging into darkness sucked the breath right out of the ballroom. For two agonizing seconds, absolute silence reigned, followed immediately by a chorus of panicked gasps and the frantic rustling of expensive silk and satin.

"What happened to the power?!"

"Get these doors open! Somebody find a light!"

Clara stood frozen in the pitch-black void, her fingers still gripping the cold handle of the silver dagger in her pocket. Her enhanced night vision slowly adjusted, allowing her to discern the faint, ghostly outlines of the towering pillars and the terrified shapes of the guests huddling together. She did not panic. Panic was a luxury for people who didn't know how to survive.

Suddenly, a sharp click-whir sound echoed from the high ceiling. A single, piercing spotlight cut through the darkness, casting a harsh, blinding beam directly onto the center of the dance floor—right where Beatrice Vance had been standing just moments before.

Beatrice was no longer standing. She was on her knees, clutching her chest, gasping for air as her expensive beige lace dress pooled around her on the marble. Standing directly behind her in the spotlight was a tall, shadowy figure wearing a tailored suit and a smooth porcelain mask, holding a sleek military-grade tablet that projected a glowing blue light onto his face.

Julian Vance.

The prodigal son, supposedly flying over the Atlantic, had stepped out of the shadows.

"Looking for me, cousin?" Julian’s voice purred through the hidden surround-sound speakers, amplified and dripping with mocking arrogance. He pulled off the porcelain mask, revealing a sharp, handsome face that bore an unsettling resemblance to Beatrice’s cruel smirk.

Clara stepped forward into the edge of the spotlight, her diamond earrings glinting like tiny stars. She did not raise her voice; she didn't need to. "You took a massive risk coming back to the mainland, Julian. The FBI has warrants out for every member of your inner circle."

Julian laughed softly, stepping over his kneeling mother without a glance of sympathy. He held up the tablet, tapping the screen twice. Instantly, a massive projection screen dropped from the vaulted ceiling behind the DJ booth, illuminating the entire ballroom in a cold, clinical white light.

On the screen was a live video feed from a secure underground medical facility. A small, sterile room appeared, featuring a heart monitor emitting a steady, rhythmic beep. Lying in the white-sheeted hospital bed was an eight-year-old boy with messy light brown hair and big hopeful hazel eyes—the exact twin of the boy currently resting safely in the back parlor.

Gasps echoed through the room. Evelyn covered her mouth, her eyes wide with horror.

"Meet the real Leo," Julian said smoothly, stepping closer to Clara. "The boy you’ve been raising for the past eight years? We swapped him in the nursery as insurance. My mother knew your husband's family trust would eventually fall under your control. We needed an inside asset with Vance blood running through his veins."

Clara’s heart stopped, but her exterior remained frozen in terrifying, razor-sharp focus. She tightened her grip on the hidden dagger. "If you touched a single hair on his head, Julian, I will personally dismantle every asset, every trust, and every breath your family takes."

Julian smiled wider, stepping into her personal space. He leaned in close, whispering something so softly that even the microphones barely caught it.

"You're too late, Clara," Julian whispered, his eyes flashing with malice. "The boy in Zurich isn't just your son. He was transferred to an off-grid research facility ten minutes ago, and the encryption key to locate him was just permanently wiped from our servers."

Julian reached into his suit jacket, pulling out a small, smoking flash drive and dropping it onto the marble floor right at Clara's feet, where it hissed quietly against the white frosting of the ruined wedding cake.
