Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The marble floor of the grand ballroom bore the messy ruin of a three-tier wedding cake. White frosting smeared across the polished stone like fresh snow, mingling with scattered wrapped boxes and the heavy shards of a decorated mirror. Eight-year-old Leo stood frozen in his miniature tuxedo and silk bowtie, his big hazel eyes shimmering with unshed tears. He still gripped a paper plate, his pale fingers trembling as he looked down at the empty spot where his dessert had been. Just moments ago, Beatrice Vance had aggressively batted the slice right out of his small hands, her face twisted in cruel disdain.

"Go get for important guests, not spoiled little beggars," Beatrice snapped, her voice cutting through the murmuring crowd of high-society attendees like a rusty blade. She adjusted the collar of her expensive beige lace dress, her chin tilted upward in an expression of haughty superiority.

Clara Vance, elegant in her floor-length beige evening gown and diamond earrings, dropped to her knees. She pulled her sobbing son into a tight, protective embrace. Across the room, her husband Thomas watched from the shadows of a velvet pillar, his jaw clenched tight in sheer disbelief.

"Mom... the waiter said I could have one," Leo whimpered, his voice cracking against Clara’s shoulder as natural breathing hitched in his chest.

Clara stood up slowly, her gaze hardening into something terrifying. She kept Leo’s small, cold hand firmly grasped within her own. She stepped forward, confronting her arrogant aunt right in front of the horrified wedding guests who had stopped sipping champagne to watch the spectacle.

"This is my sister's wedding," Clara said, her voice dangerously low, restrained, and freezing cold. "Don't make this ugly."

Beatrice scoffed, rolling her eyes with utter contempt. "You think you own this room, Clara? You’re just a gold-digger playing host."

"I paid for every single brick of this venue, and I wrote the checks that fed you tonight," Clara whispered, stepping closer.

Beatrice sneered and turned sharply on her heel, intending to storm away in a huff. But her high heel caught the edge of a stray ribbon from a fallen gift box. She tripped backward, flailing her arms wildly. With a deafening crash of breaking glass and splintering wood, Beatrice slammed directly into the decorative mirror and the towering stack of heavy wedding presents.

The security guards stationed at the heavy double doors instantly pushed them open, rushing forward as Beatrice lay trapped beneath the debris, bleeding from a small scratch on her forehead and staring up in utter, unadulterated shock.
