Chapter 10 - The Patriarch's Return

The deep, gravelly voice of Arthur Vance Sr. reverberated through the grand ballroom's surround-sound speakers, carrying the weight of a ghost returned from the grave. The high-society guests stood frozen, entirely paralyzed by the surreal unfolding of events. Beatrice Vance was curled into a trembling ball on the marble floor, her expensive beige lace dress ruined, muttering incoherent denials to herself over and over again.
"Arthur... please... it was all Julian's idea! He forced me!" Beatrice suddenly shrieked, breaking the silence as she lunged toward the giant projection screen, clawing at the digital image of her missing brother-in-law like a desperate animal.
Julian, still pinned against the marble pillar by federal agents, glared at his mother with pure venom. "Shut your pathetic mouth, you old witch! You were the one who orchestrated the entire swap in the maternity ward eight years ago!"
Clara lowered her smartphone slowly, her hazel eyes fixed on the live feed from the Zurich tarmac. The wind on the screen howled against the microphone of her father-in-law's satellite phone. She did not raise her voice, but her tone carried a chilling, razor-sharp authority that instantly commanded the room.
"You've been watching us the entire time, haven't you?" Clara asked into the phone, her restrained emotions barely masking a volcano of simmering fury. "You faked your own plane crash five years ago to flush out the corruption within your own family, leaving your grandchildren as collateral damage in your war."
A low, humorless chuckle echoed through the speakers from the Swiss Alps. "Survival requires sacrifice, Clara. But you proved tonight that you possess more steel than the entire bloodline combined. That's why I left the empire in your hands—and why I ensured your true son was protected before Julian’s network could reach him."
Thomas stepped up beside Clara, his hand gently touching her shoulder. "What do you mean, your true son? Arthur, what are you talking about?"
Clara turned her head slowly to look at her husband, her heart hammering against her ribs. The dark puzzle pieces finally locked into place with terrifying clarity. "The swap wasn't just about insurance, Thomas. Beatrice didn't just switch Leo with an orphan. She took my firstborn and hid him away... and the boy we raised as Leo isn't even mine."
The entire ballroom sucked in a collective breath. Evelyn Vance let out a hysterical laugh from her spot against the velvet pillar, her mascara running down her cheeks. "Oh, the delicious irony! You fought so hard to protect a child that doesn't even share your DNA!"
Clara didn't flinch. She kept her gaze locked on the giant screen, where Arthur Vance Sr. was now stepping into the back of a black armored SUV on the Zurich tarmac. The vehicle door slammed shut with a heavy, definitive thud.
"My private jet will touch down at the estate’s private helipad in exactly twenty-two minutes," the patriarch’s voice commanded through the phone. "Keep them all locked in that room, Clara. Because when I walk through those doors, the people who stole your child are going to learn what true ruin looks like."
The phone line went dead with a sharp click.

Before Clara could respond, a deafening explosion echoed from the heavy oak double doors of the ballroom, blowing the reinforced electronic locks completely off their hinges and sending thick plumes of black smoke rolling across the polished marble floor.
