Chapter 3 - The Federal Envelope

The sudden appearance of the man in the charcoal suit sucked all remaining oxygen out of the grand ballroom. Beatrice’s raised hand froze mid-air, her trembling fingers hovering just inches from Clara’s flawless cheek. Every pair of high-society eyes shifted away from the wreckage of the wedding cake and toward the doorway. The newcomer was a stranger to most, possessing an austere expression and carrying himself with the rigid discipline of someone who answered only to a judge.
"Clara Vance?" the man asked, his voice cutting cleanly through the ambient music that had hesitantly resumed overhead.
Clara did not flinch. She simply lowered the microphone and nodded once. "I am she. State your business, counselor."
The stranger stepped past the security guards, ignoring Beatrice completely as she stumbled backward into a stack of unbroken floral arrangements. He opened the thick manila folder, extracting a crisp, multi-page legal document held together by a heavy silver clip. The paper rustled loudly in the cavernous silence of the hall.
"My name is Arthur Pendelton, senior investigator for the state’s financial oversight commission," the man announced, his gaze sweeping over the crowd of wealthy attendees. "I am here pursuant to a court-ordered asset freeze and forensic audit regarding the Vance Family Trust, specifically targeting misappropriated philanthropic funds."
A collective gasp rippled through the wedding guests. Several prominent businessmen in the front row abruptly dropped their champagne flutes, the crystal shattering against the floor in a pathetic echo of the mirror from earlier. Beatrice’s face drained of what little color remained, her mouth dropping open in silent terror as she recognized the name of the agency.
"This is a mistake!" Evelyn shrieked, rushing forward to block Arthur’s path. "This is a private celebration! You have no right to come in here waving papers like a common thug! Clara, call off your circus dogs right now!"
Clara remained motionless, her arms crossed over her beige evening gown. She looked down at her aunt and cousin, her expression entirely unreadable. "My circus, Evelyn? I didn't invite the federal government here tonight. But it appears someone finally opened the books that Beatrice kept locked away in the family estate."
Arthur Pendelton did not even glance at Evelyn. He kept his eyes locked on Clara, extending the document toward her. "Mrs. Vance, as the primary benefactor who unknowingly injected three million dollars into the trust last month, you are legally entitled to the preliminary seizure notification. The funds were not used for charity. They were funneled directly into offshore accounts controlled by Beatrice and her inner circle."
Beatrice let out a strangled gasp, stumbling against a marble pillar. "It's a lie! Clara fabricated this! She’s trying to destroy us because her son didn't get a piece of cake!"
The sheer absurdity of Beatrice's defense drew quiet murmurs of disbelief from the surrounding guests. To blame a massive federal investigation on an eight-year-old child wanting dessert was a level of delusion only true desperation could produce.
Clara took the document from the investigator's hand, her fingers brushing the cold paper. She did not open it immediately. Instead, she turned her head toward the dark hallway where Thomas had taken young Leo just minutes prior. Through the open mahogany door, she caught a glimpse of something terrifying.
May you like
Thomas was standing in the corridor, his face completely drained of color, holding his phone out toward her with a shaking hand. On the screen, a live security feed of the estate’s private vault showed the heavy steel door blown completely off its hinges.
