Chapter 6 - The Locked Doors

The heavy metallic click of the ballroom’s reinforced security locks reverberated through the vast hall like a gunshot. Conversations instantly died. The soft string quartet stopped playing mid-note, the cellist’s bow hovering awkwardly in the air. High-society guests turned in unison toward the double doors, only to find three armed private security guards taking up defensive positions outside the glass panels, sealing the room tighter than a bank vault.
"What is the meaning of this?!" a prominent city councilman shouted, standing up from his table and smoothing his silk tie with a trembling hand. "Open these doors right now! I am a personal friend of the mayor!"
Beatrice Vance spun around, her eyes wide with sudden panic as she realized the trap had sprung—not on Clara, but on her. She pointed a shaking finger at Clara, her voice cracking as she tried to regain her haughty composure. "You demented little savage! Have you lost your mind? Unlatch these doors this instant or I’ll have you stripped of every social title you possess!"
Clara did not even blink. She stood near the edge of the ruined wedding cake, the white frosting staining the hem of her beige evening gown like old snow. With slow, deliberate movements, she handed the microphone back to the DJ and stepped down onto the pristine marble floor. Every eye in the room followed her every breath, her every subtle micro-expression.
"Social titles, Aunt Beatrice?" Clara’s voice was low, melodic, and terrifyingly cold. She walked closer to the older woman, who instinctively retreated until her back hit the stack of wrapped wedding gifts. "You talk about social standing while you spend your entire life trading in stolen identities and forged medical records."
"Lies! All of it lies!" Beatrice screeched, her voice losing its aristocratic polish and devolving into a frantic shriek. She looked desperately around the room at the sea of wealthy elites. "Don't listen to her! She’s mentally unstable! Her company is bankrupt, she’s fabricating federal investigations to cover her own financial crimes!"
Arthur Pendelton stepped out from the shadows of a marble pillar, holding a small digital tablet displaying a live-streamed feed of financial ledgers. "For the record, Mrs. Vance, the federal oversight commission has already seized three offshore accounts tied directly to your maiden name. Furthermore, biometric verification confirms the Zurich transfer originated from the estate's private terminal just twelve minutes ago."
The ballroom erupted into pure chaos. Shouts of indignation, gasps of shock, and frantic whispers bounced off the crystal chandeliers. Several socialites rushed toward the windows, only to find the heavy storm shutters automatically dropping into place, plunging the edges of the room into deep, dramatic shadows.
Evelyn pushed her way through the panicking crowd, grabbing Beatrice’s arm. "Aunt Beatrice, what are they talking about? What did you do in Zurich?"
"Shut up! Shut your mouth!" Beatrice hissed, shoving Evelyn away with surprising viciousness.
Clara closed the remaining distance between them. She stopped just two feet away from Beatrice, her hazel eyes locked onto the older woman's darting, terrified pupils. She reached slowly into the secret pocket of her evening gown, her fingers wrapping around the cold steel handle of the silver dagger she had retrieved from the vault.
"You told me once, Beatrice, that I didn't belong in this family," Clara whispered softly, so only the two of them could hear over the roaring panic of the guests. "You were right. I don't belong among thieves, liars, and child-stealers."

Clara pulled the silver dagger out, letting the overhead chandelier catch the lethal blade. But before she could speak another word, the overhead lights in the grand ballroom flickered violently twice and then died completely, plunging the entire room into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
