Chapter 13 - The Shattered Windows

The deafening crash of reinforced glass shattering inward sent a shockwave through the grand ballroom. Shards of crystal-clear safety glass rained down like lethal hail, mixing with the indoor sprinkler water and the ruined frosting on the floor. High-society guests screamed, diving behind tables and velvet pillars for cover as thick, freezing night air rushed into the humid room.
"Get down! Down!" Arthur Pendelton roared, drawing his service weapon and dragging Clara behind the thickest marble pillar near the center dais.
Marcus Vance did not flinch. He stood completely still amidst the flying debris, his cold grey eyes narrowing as he stared out through the shattered window frames into the swirling snow outside. The tactical squad he had brought in instantly raised their rifles, forming a defensive wall around Marcus and the two identical boys who stood frozen in confusion near the ruined threshold.
Through the broken windows, heavy grappling hooks flew inward, latching securely onto the marble window sills with a loud clack. A second later, dark, heavily armored figures began rappelling down from the estate's upper balconies, swinging gracefully through the open frames and landing in a tactical three-point stance on the wet floor.
"Federal Counter-Intelligence! Nobody move!" a booming voice echoed over the roaring wind.
Leading the tactical reinforcement was a tall, imposing man in a slate-grey combat uniform, his face obscured by a dark visor. He stepped forward, lowering his rifle just an inch as he scanned the room. When his gaze landed on Marcus Vance, a grim, humorless smile broke across his rugged features.
"Marcus," the commander said, his voice deep and unmistakably familiar to everyone in the Vance family. "It’s been a long decade. I trust my welcome home party isn't too disruptive."
Beatrice Vance, still huddled on the floor in her soaked beige lace dress, let out a sound that was half-gasp, half-sob. She stared at the man in the combat uniform as if she were looking at a ghost returned from the underworld.
"Arthur... Arthur Vance Senior?" Beatrice whispered, her voice trembling so violently her teeth chattered. "You... you were on that plane! We watched it burn over the Alps!"
The patriarch of the Vance empire slowly reached up, pressing a release latch on his dark visor and lifting it away from his face. The weathered, sharp features and piercing hazel eyes matched the live feed from Zurich down to the microscopic detail.
"You watched a decoy plane burn, Beatrice, financed by the very offshore accounts you and Julian stole from my corporate portfolio," Arthur Sr. replied smoothly, walking forward through the shattered glass. "You thought you killed the head of the snake, but you only woke it up."
Clara slowly stood up from behind the marble pillar, her beige evening gown soaked and ruined, her hair plastered to her face. She looked at her father-in-law with eyes burning with suppressed fury and infinite resolve. She didn't care about the corporate empire, the stolen money, or the broken glass. She only cared about the two small boys standing across the room.
"You used my children as bait," Clara said, her voice dangerously low, restrained, and freezing cold. She took a measured step toward the patriarch, her gaze fixed entirely on him. "You let them live in shadows and lies just to execute your family chess match."
Arthur Sr. stopped walking. He looked at Clara, seeing the exact same terrifying, unyielding fire in her hazel eyes that he saw every time he looked in the mirror. He gave her a slow, respectful nod.
"I gave you the tools to survive, Clara," Arthur Sr. answered quietly. "And now, it’s time to settle the board once and for all."

Before Arthur Sr. could take another step, Julian Vance—who had managed to slip out of the federal agents' loosened handcuffs during the chaos—suddenly lunged forward from the shadows, grabbing a heavy silver champagne bucket filled with broken glass and raising it high above his head with a maniacal scream, aiming directly for Clara's unprotected back.
